Floating a lil trial balloon of an idea here: What if the Vikings traded JJ McCarthy to the Giants

Sam Darnold has the Vikings one win away from the NFC North title and No. 1 seed in the NFC 👏 (via @vikings.bsky.social)

Viking only have 38 players signed for next year. Some of their most important players will be free agents. They were counting on JJ McCarthy rookie deal to keep many.

In theory, as a Giants fan, I would love to draft Travis Hunter and trade for JJ
If I’m the Vikings though, wouldn’t they just franchise tag Darnold? And keep JJ .. and decide on it next year?
McCarthy/Lock!
Vikings get to add a stud while committing to Sam, who has proven he can be the QB they need.
He's perfect.
And it's the usual reason: MN team owners are cheap ba$tard$. Rookie salary for the 23 yr old is vastly less < free agent salary.
No McCarthy input, just sayin’ about Darnold.
And Mayfield.

Their entire secondary are FAs and Flores will be gone
Otherwise, it’s a lose-lose scenario for the Vikings. If they let Sam walk and he’s good, they look bad. If they keep Sam and he’s bad, they look bad.
The Vikings coaches and roster have a hand in all this. If they can do it with a cast off backup they can do it with their hand picked 21 year old
He might be worth a very good pick in a trade (if Min keep Darnold).
And I think he’s younger than the other two.
🤚If Darnold gets to the title game & plays well, there's GOTTA be a team out there that'll do way better the 3/$110 I've seen floated lately
Would be fun if teams had to announce their tag plans NOW
He’s got to clear that pretty easily (or Lamar has a collision suit).

The Vikings will likely franchise him. More per year possibly, but getting him on a 2-year contract after this season isn’t happening. If that’s their best offer and he hits free agency, he’ll be gone.
But if the Vikings lose in their first playoff game, do you really do the deal?
It’s like watching the palace guards snap out of the witch’s curse at the end of the Wizard of Oz.

Jets? 😏
McCarty is still an unproven commodity.
My ideal would be:
- Check the price on McCarthy (can't give up Lawrence)
- Draft Hunter if available to pair with Nabers
- Get a coach who's both: aggressive on offense, good in the locker room
I could be wrong but I don't see them trading him to a bad team
But I’m also unconvinced by any QB in this year’s draft.
