I think one thing that goes unmentioned way too often is employer contributions to healthcare in the US. Yes, employees pay into plans, but so do employers. To the tune of $600-1400/mo.

Never paid.. (maybe through tax) 10 days of stay at Fiona Stanley Hospital last year after heart issues, 6 months after care and a visit every few months to the head doc and apart from a few pills I Haven't paid a cent for all the machines and Docs that looked after me.

Don't worry. Even things that aren't covered are usually very cheap. An MRI I had was not covered by my medicare card, and it cost me $350 AUD (~$220 USD). The providers aren't in an arms race with the health insurance companies to game rebates. And many public health insurers are non-profits.

Yes i believe for hospital cover you can choose to pay higher premiums for no excess. All urgent hospital visits are free. All other medical visits also free but waitlists can be years if not deemed urgent (ie knee replacements) private cover lets you jump the queue with selected network/doctor

But should note there are 3 different levels of hospital cover. Only top one/gold usually does joint replacements now. But even better you can get “extras cover” for dental, major dental, physio etc to varying levels of cover. Hubby recently had 3 visits to dentist over a few months - zero to pay.

I got frigging jumped on for posting this, so here: this is the fanciest plan available to me with in patient hospital, dental, AND optical. At $23 US a week at current conversion.

It may not cover every contingency, but it’s a hell of a lot better than my US PPO that costs five times this.

Just because I'm worried you'll get a shock - "100% of MBS" doesn't mean 100% of the cost. You will still have out of pocket costs for most GPs, allied health, and hospital stays (if you use a private hospital). It basically gives you the same coverage as an Aussie citizen with no insurance.

Why? Faster staff are well, sooner they're back to work.

Also: A lot of emergency things are actually covered by Medicare[*] which is free (eg: paid for by taxes) or vehicular accidents in Victoria by the TAC (paid for by vehicle registration fees) so private insurance tends to be mostly useful for optical, physio, dental.
