Thing is, the dragon mentality characterizes the struggle as humanity against an otherwordly entity, which I don't agree with as a framework. The monsters in our timeline are humans, they were born as humans, grew up as humans, are humans.
Where are the bones? Where are unicorns? I believe in the celtic god Lugh because of my last name.....but I know people only worshipped him and they deity wasn't real. It's only real to men......and not reality.
The reality is that open minded, tolerant people who actually care about others are the vast majority. It's those deluged with billionaire produced hate media that get a lot of attention, because news is a business. Point the sword at the real adversary and we can indeed win.
You can choose to keep the books and things you’ve already purchased and you can also choose not to further his fortune by buying anything from him post this scandal. It’s ok to still be moved by his art but to also accept he is a flawed man who did awful things.
Agreed. He may go the way of she who shall not be named. Extremely grateful for the work he created, glad I got to read and share it when I did. My heart breaks for the Good Omen’s TV show.
There can be two opposite things that are both true: Neil Gaiman is terrible person and Neil Gaiman’s books are special. If the books don’t trigger you I say keep them. However, I understand that it can be hard to separate the one from the other.
I started American Gods and was enojying it. Hadn’t looked into the allegations, but had an idea that he had been accused of misconduct. Looked into it and tried to keep going after, but couldn’t read the sex stuff he writes knowing what he does irl
Yes... I'm mentally replacing this with Ursula K Le Guin's quote: "We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings."
The phrase "more than true", in and of itself, amuses me, but as used here for stories that are literally not true yet have timeless applicability to any number of true situations, it's actually a great quote.
Thank you for clarifying. I am a massive Good Omens fan and always will be. I was deeply saddened by the news, but as the Good Omens fandom has concluded after much 💔: We have built something bigger and more beautiful than the original story, and that is ours, not his. Also.. Terry Pratchett 😇
Well said. I held him in such high regard due to how much I enjoyed his writing (and collaboration with Sir Terry) - they say “Never meet your idols” and I’m beginning to see why :(
I think the original quote is from someone else-
“Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”
― G.K. Chesterton
I had no idea it was from him! I had to google this though because I actually have the Gaiman quote set as a reminder. I mean, I literally receive it as a reminder every day at 4:00PM. I may have to change it to this misquote now.
Yeah. Neil was omnipresent on tumblr until the news broke. Then he vanished.
I started re-reading Coraline, about a young girl who gets abused....thought about the SA charges...put it back on the shelf.
I feel the same. It's a struggle.. the right dismisses (or coddle) bad behavior. The left holds people accountable, thought a few times (Al Franken) it might have been a rush to judgement. I hope there's a road to redemption for NG. But right now I just feel mildly nauseous when I think about it
This is not a Neil Gaiman quote, it's a quote from G.K. Chesterton (one of Neil's favorite authors) ALSO NEIL GAIMAN IS A SEXUAL PREDATOR.

What he did was wrong. Period. He deserves to be taken down all of those notches, and probably more.
He abused the power that I, as a fan, gave him. He betrayed the trust I put in him.
He groomed a 17 year old girl who came to him at a convention and told him that he saved her life.
Fuck him with a splintered wood dildo.
I am racist about imps a bit, though, but that may be Rumplestiltskin and impish boy propaganda
But they could have made Ice resist Fairy, maybe Fairy resist Ice too, and did anti-Dragon stuff that way
Also,
I've heard the quote is derivative of G.K. Chesterton, too, but I forget how much I had confirmed that or not

I had that quote as my signature on an account on a writing forum for years.
Innocence is not bestowed simply by the ability to pay the courts and lawyers.
He was a hero, and now he goes into the dustbin to make room for someone worthwhile to look up to.
Life is too short to hold space for serial rapists.
One of the charges was a young woman he met at a con when she was under age, and he was in his 40s.
The other was his babysitter.
Both pretty gross.
I started re-reading Coraline, about a young girl who gets abused....thought about the SA charges...put it back on the shelf.
And then he turned around and ruined it. Fucking despicable.
