I think there are better examples of oversinging than that. It had a gospel vibe to it, especially near the end, so her singing style suited the gospel element of the cover. Bieber's cover of The Christmas Song or Fergie singing the USA national anthem are better examples of oversinging
Agreed on Fergie, never heard the Bieber one. Although I will say its hard to oversing a Christmas song. They are a bit like show tunes in that they are supposed to be over the top and hammy, see Mariah.
I find Burkes cover jarring because of how understated all other versions I've heard are
I’m working on a box set of my own “Hallelujah” covers
every subsequent version has an additional verse and slower tempo, except the final version which will be 26 hours of the sound of a piano peddle being pressed and released
I don’t know who that is because the name is too close to Jason Mraz and I never knew who that was either. Too many dudes out there with names that have the same effect as a MIB mind eraser pen imho.
You pick a phrase, you pick a rhyme, repeat the sound another time,
Five iambs, then an extra beat will do ya.
Another rhyme, a rising note - congratulations, you just wrote
Another goddamn verse to Hallelujah!
most all of the covers after Buckley are based on the Buckley version. And they all have that quality of trying to get one more pot of coffee out of the used grounds. This Mendes version is about 96 pots with the same filter
No. To quote the thing that got my Twitter deactivated a few years back which I said in response to Jeff Buckley slander, "You deserve the death". Hallelujah is a great song, and there are 4 versions that matter; Leonard, John, Jeff, and Rufus.
You’re either a fan of the Rufus Wainwright cover or a fan of the Jeff Buckley cover we are not equipped for a third option it throws everything out of balance
In an interview w/ Leonard a few years before his passing,he said as much as he was pleased it was a newly discovered song to so many, he wished it’d ease up a little. Some artists who covered it obviously didn’t understand “hallelujah” is also a term used to express variable degrees of “well, fuck”
But to be fair, I didn’t mean Leonard Cohen covers should be restricted to Canadians only. I’m a fan of Jeff Buckley’s cover and esp. John Cale’s. I was urging discretion. But as I write that, I realize I don’t actually want to restrict art. So…I throw up my hands. Have at it Shawn.
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a multi-layered song that touches on various themes, including love, faith, and human experience. While it does contain some sensual and intimate imagery, it's not solely about sexual intercourse.
The song uses biblical references and personal reflections to explore the complexities of love and spirituality. It's this blend of sacred and secular that gives "Hallelujah" its depth and resonance.
I mean that tracks with Sabrina Carpenter putting the line "Jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen" in "Dumb and Poetic", which is basically a Shawn Mendes diss track.
Has ever a song been so punished? It’s been enduring this sort of thing for two decades now. Extraordinary to witness a song go from good to basic through no fault of its own.
I never agreed with you comparing him to John Mayer until I heard that album. Even at his most insufferable before, he had more flair and bombast than John Mayer, but not anymore.
crazy album because it's honestly pretty good, loses steam near the end but doesn't fall into downright bad territory, and then that cover comes on and it's AWFUL.
Especially since Sabrina Carpenter absolutely bodied him with "try to come off like you're soft and well spoken, jack off to lyrics by Leonard Cohen." They didn't convince him hard enough apparently to drop it

There was a recent tribute to Cohen, and the version she did was absolutely incredible.
Seriously though, he has a nice voice, I’d be willing to give it a listen.

Didn't she write the theme song to "Suddenly Susan?"

Everything else is a cheap imitation.
Nothing touches the original, in any case.
And ofc
It's... a choice.

I'd be happy if Hallelujah was included in this law.
Shawn should just go away. Thanks.
