Watergate remains the touchstone because it was the last time that everyone - press, congressional Democrats, the judiciary, and even congressional Republicans like Hugh Scott & Barry Goldwater openly defended democracy against tyranny.

He was never going to be impeached for the war going badly. Big street demos and shouting, but no grounds for impeachment and no Congressional will. But obstruction of justice and bribery (the cover-up, not the burglary)? That became clearly unacceptable to solid Congress members of both parties.

People cite Watergate because it's not been memory holed and it was the most egregious action until now. It's a historical given with little pushback and it was the benchmark for presidential criminality until Trump. Watergate is a gnat on an an elephant's ass compared to Trump, Musk and the GOP.

He passed the "this is like Watergate" line early in his first term. Now? Not even remotely comparable. (I went to law school shortly after Watergate.) And way too many lawyers forgot (or never absorbed) the ethics lessons law schools added after 1974.
