The thing that confuses me here is you have to convince people it's scamming in the first place. And some of this type of thing gets a reaction that's more like "well of course I'd never go that far but some of it's not entirely wrong, you're just writing it off because it's not your truth."

This Propublica piece really puts it into perspective. This doctor's actions (like say misdiagnosing a 40 year old with cancer and then giving him chemo till he died) were unbelievable, but the community reaction was to put up billboards supporting him.

The article makes it seem like it's recycling the FC proves telepathy is real and the limitations of "western" science arguments of the early 90's. I've personally known people who believe that continuously since about the mid-2000's, and it never really went away.

Stubblefield was both one of the major proponents of FC and one of the most vicious, deceptive critics of its critics. It was a big deal that her of all people was involved sexual abuse via FC. The popular media stories never quite honed in on that aspect.

On top of this, Stubblefield’s mother is also a facilitator who was involved in a sexual abuse case and she (the mother) continued as head of Autcom for years after Stubblefield was convicted. It’s why so many disability scholars defend Stubblefield - they’re defending their mate’s daughter.

FC always protects the method over the typers; instead of remaining neutral in abuse cases, they always viciously defend whatever version of events protects FC. It’s one of the main reasons to avoid it, IMO.

Law & Order ep in the 90s re: a horribly abusive residential school for autistic teens: One mom supported the dr. b/c he had helped her nonverbal son "talk" via facilitated communication. McCoy made her close her eyes while he showed the son a card. She could not facilitate his identifying it.

I live in one of the FC hotspots in the country - Thanks Anne Donnellan - and have had to sit and just stew as I watch people have their thoughts, whatever those may be, be substituted by others. Pro-FC documentaries have been all but required viewing for the local ID/DD system at times.
