Will it definitely go this way? Fuck no. Nothing destined. Nothing's certain, now least of all. But this is just as likely - and I would argue more likely - than any success on his part.

I doubt he'll last his full four years without an impeachment backed by, perhaps even instigated by, the Republicans.
Here's how I think it will play out. He is running a less-than joined-up administration. So far we've seen various characters already at war with each other, a bill he backed...
... defeated with the aid of 38 rebel Republicans, and SCOTUS drawing the line at allowing him to escape sentencing. There's no real plan, and when there is one it's difficult to see this ragtag crowd of competing interests uniting behind it. We've already had visas, but that will only be the...
... start. They united to defeat the Dems. That was the easy bit. Point a finger and shout in unison. But uniting around a plan will prove, I believe, impossible.
By the midterms, his popularity will have tanked and the Republicans will have a lame-duck President with a very singular brand and...
... as far as I can tell, no candidate to take over as MAGA CEO. I just don't see anyone who could take it on and it's been around for long enough for a successor to become apparent were there to be a viable candidate.
The Republicans are going to need to reform around something. MAGA...
... MAGA ain't it, Trump ain't it, they will need to shift and these are career politicians unlike Trump who's in it for the glory and the grift happy to retire with a lot of dosh and his place in history. So they will dump him long enough before the 2028 election they can regroup.
I would factor in the absence of institutionalist Republicans this time around, and the fact that he's brought much of the media to heel, including nearly all social media. I agree about his laziness and incompetence but I do believe he will do lots of damage this time around and it will be lasting.
His hardline Christofascist buddies are in charge now. Sure, Elon is there and isn’t it all a big show. The ones truly running him are the project 2025 mob and they’ve got some very fringe things they want to do.
A lot of people in America should be very afraid right now. These are not good people.
The next few years will be grim. He'll sit like a dead weight on our conscience and decency. But don't be taken in the triumphalism. Don't give up hope. These people are little wee cunts. They can be beaten. And in the end they will be.
I totally agree. But Christ alive it’s depressing to have to pin your hopes for the survival of more or less everything on supervillain ineptitude and bullies falling out with each other 😕
Yes, people are terrified of what he might do once he has removed the ‘grown-ups’ in government who would otherwise tell him ‘No’, - but it is also those grown-ups who know how to make that system work, and so he may well end up being thwarted by his own extremism…
He'll make life impossible for already struggling Labour. I really worry about that & we risk a shift to a right wing govt in the UK in 2029 partly driven by Trump. Which will destroy any positive tentative steps taken by Labour. Am I being too pessimistic?
Their plans won’t work, but the blame will be shifted elsewhere. The majority of people are clearly greedy, stupid or gullible. That allows these bad faith actors to succeed in perpetuity.
they'll all end fighting with themselves like rats in a sack. its inevitable. the only details are the when and the how. but it will be the ultimate reality show - which is what Trump is ultimately all about.
When the big 80yo cheeseburger eating angry man is gone in 2-3 years, all the MAGA will revolt against the tech-bros stealing their services & stripping their assets. Won't be pretty, but probably our only hope.
I think you are correct with a healthy dose of optimism. It strikes me that many voters think prices will fall so they will be better off but I don’t see policies that will do that. Tariffs will increase prices in the US so buyers remorse seems likely.
Think tanks including The Heritage Foundation, authors of Project 2025 are behind him now. He was just their way into power. Do you think all these mega wealthy people think HE'S the mastermind? They know what's going to happen.
His admission of fixing the ballot machines needs to be investigated.
Obviously it won't
But makes you wonder when he holds power over the courts and media, HOW will there be reliable news.
The constant propaganda will wear down the publics ability to see anything but what he wants
We're brought up on the narrative that good and right ultimately always prevails - but this guy has at his disposal people who own the means to distort the reality of huge numbers of people. It's unprecedented, horrifying.
They can indeed be beaten, but the fact is, they weren’t.
They are in power, and we know the damage fascists can inflict.
I never give up the hope, that sense will prevail, that humanity and decency are achievable goals, but pragmatically people fall for the far right con time and time again.
The only good thing about his Presidency starting today is that we can begin the countdown to November 2028, in the hope that POTUS 48 cannot possibly be worse.
Since when is sight spelt S I T E?! I refer you to an earlier post about my inability to type, spell and proofread. It’s hard to credit but I did go to school occasionally.
Lots of swearing/curse words needed for Trump, but I always hesitate if the worst one we can use in English is ugly one for women's genitalia. I'd prefer if there was less sexist language and more creative use of English. And Sarah you're amongst the most proficient here at that sort of creativity.
Not specifically objecting to sexual roots to words but also note their limitations. Also wary of men using the C word unthinkingly especially for a rapist. Sarah Murphy has been wonderful in her use of English language in castigating many of our politicians, and so I admire her adeptness of use
I felt so depressed listening to the speech ( I tried to avoid it but every channel is broadcasting it , so no escape ) but your post once again gave me a little bit of hope .
One question Ian is he can only stay one term? So normally when a POTUS starts his second term he immedaitely loses power as everyone starts to focus on succession. Will this not be the same with DT?
He has already made his billions with his coin. Melania's divorce is sorted with hers. Eric & Junior will probably launch their own coins in the next week, then they'll all be set up and lose interest in doing any work.
We tried on both sides of the Atlantic to introduce fairly tame social democracy and got told by liberals to get back in our boxes.
So, how do liberals plan to win? Fairly bereft of ideas, to say the very least; whilst also insisting they be the only other horse in the race. I don't feel confident.

Or he'll U-turn on it and say that the threat worked.

I felt it was more 'you'.
money talks, and the right have the money. they've now got all social media apart from Bluesky
morons seem to delight in sabotaging anyone - themselves included - just for the "victory" of someone they voted for being in power
fucking infuriating
But only a few of them!😡😡😡😡😡

It's hard to maintain though.

In my 70s I just wanted to meander gently and joyfully into the west, and now it's just about impossible.
They are in power, and we know the damage fascists can inflict.

Perfect. Bookmarked for moments of need. Of which there may be plenty in the next 4 years.
Thank you for making us smile today.
Many of our swearwords are sexual in nature but are not associated with the root noun or verb. (So to speak)
Do you think users demonstrate prejudice?
Or is it just the sexual nature you don't like.

I think you've become my guru.
