I adapted an indie game called Close Encounters (https://presspotgames.itch.io/close-encounters). My students sat somewhere on campus and observed human behavior using enactive prompts (emotionality, autonomy, etc.). We used the data to think about AI. It was rad.

can you give a skeet sized characterization of "participatory sensemaking" in the sense relevant here? i'm thinking things like kinesthesis but not sure. maybe instead it means joint attention? like, what is the kind of whole the sense making participates in?

You'd dig this stuff. It's strategies and practices for generating and transforming meaning though the ongoing process of interacting, and how that shapes the experiences of the individuals who are engaged in the activity. (That's probably not helpful)

I'm reminded of a favorite course I had in psych grad school. Effectively a dreams workshop, folks would describe a dream they'd had, and we'd then take turns associating to it in the format of, "If this were my dream..."

That's not telling the dreamer what it meant, but does foster resonances.

A reflection journal could also be interesting. Jot down how you see a concept showing up in everyday life for a week. How does your understanding of the concept change as you apply it? What objections do you have at the end of the exercise? Refines understanding & grows critical reflex.

I like it because people almost always have an off-the-cuff objection to new philosophical concepts. Of *course* they seem silly. You have to sit with it a bit, then the criticism may have some teeth.

It would depend a lot on what you’re teaching, but I’d love to see more of this for concepts that are tough to grasp.

It’s simple, but I stole the “think, pair, share” tactic from working in K-12 and have used it a lot in business and policy contexts. Have them write down their understanding, …

Then discuss and refine with their neighbor or a small group, then call on groups to share with the whole class. Much better than just throwing out questions in a large group or using the Socratic method.
