Russia drafted more soldiers, and most of the casualties are from those new, untrained "mobik" units. The professional core of the Russian army is still mostly there, although running low on heavy equipment.
Remember Reagan’s There is a bear in the woods! ad? It was all bs. The bear was toothless. We spent billions to defend ourselves from a bunch of drunken mopes.
once this became an unrestrained war effort, every conceivable outcome would have been awful. And here we are, hundreds of thousands dead & billions spent with extremely little to show for it
Ukraine remaining sovereign is great but many experienced diplomats that have worked within the region would tell you it didn't necessitate mass death to preserve that. Russias invasion didn't happen in a vacuum, tho of course we have to hold them directly responsible for invading
The evisceration of the Russian army and Ukraine's ongoing independence are two big wins, so far. Avoiding a massive f off genocide is quite good as well. And if we decide to help Ukraine finish this war successfully, then the end of Putin will be f'ing sweet to watch.
That's why they need a "black swan" event.

Keep in mind that the usual 3:1 wounded/KIA ratio doesn't apply either. Russian CASEVAC is almost non-existent and their combat medical facilities are badly dysfunctional. The ratio may be as high as 1:1
I wish this sort of information was more part of the public narrative. it still confuses me why republicans are reluctant to rally behind the underdogs who are standing up to the oppressive Russians. It's the Cold and Revolutionary Wars rolled into one story!
The question is what percentage of the losses are experienced troops, and how many are conscripts.
If they're churning through conscripts but accumulating a core of veterans they can use to train troops and evolve tactics this can go on for a long time.
How come the “Ukrainian counteroffensive” didn’t work if Russians are taking these types of loses? They must replacing troops & weapons at a much higher rate than Ukraine
Great, horrible piece about this on the PBS Newshour last night. Putin is press-ganging ethnic minorities far from Moscow and using them as cannon fodder.
If the Russian military currently exists as a force of 45,000 soldiers plus some untrained convicts, how does the Ukraine not mow them down in a matter of days?
Anyone following the war has been aware of these numbers all along but I guess the NYT stopped bothering to report on it months ago and that has left some people in the dark. Paper of record etc etc
I’m having trouble believing this AND simultaneously holding in my head the idea that Ukraine is is danger of imminent defeat if they don’t get another aid package
Unfortunately, with Russia's much greater human and material capacity they can afford to absorb those losses unless Western support for Ukraine continues for several more years.

Stalin purged 220000 own party members
The country lost 8.7 million soldiers in WW2 over territory.
Remember that Putin came to power by bombing of Moscow apartments.
And the first thing he did as a president is to deny help to 118 Kursk marines.
The mobsters don't care about lives.
theres currently some 150 - 200,000 russian troops in ukraine
2. lots of drafted reinforcements added.
3. not all of the 315k casualties are gone. Russia sends soldiers with horrific wounds, even missing parts, right back into battle.
4. Large weapons operated by a few repel advances.
And it is not 45K, they've been drafting and contracting new people
How long did it takee the US to win that war?
