My wife and I were out for a walk and noticed a Canadian flag that someone had hung on a light post, and it occurred to us that the flag might belong to us all again.
Desperate times call for desperate measures.
A hint of it (at least, economically) will do us some good. We can still be critical of our government/history/ institutions, etc. and work to improve.
When KCIII invites them to visit, and lays out a banquet for them, I hope that will be the point at which Canadians decide to drop the monarchy.
Maybe some good will come out of this nationalism.
I can see the parallels at work to coerce Canadians against immigrants though. Don't be fooled. Immigration isn't perfect (open for companies to abuse low wage earners etc), but it has made Canada stronger and more resilient. Its the cash grab of multi nationals hurting all of us. Solidarity!
true. there's a danger for sure, and i think Canada already has an undercurrent of anti-immigration sentiment for various reasons, but this current wave is not about that, it feels much healthier
As much as I appreciate people celebrating and supporting Trudeau in defending us through this, there's a lot that he stumbled on. I do think that we need a forceful condemnation from either provincial or fed NDP. I don't think Singh has said anything!
I'm heartened by the national and international solidarity in crisis and want to see the best outcome for all of us, but wouldn't consider that nationalistic. Concerned about disaster capitalists exploiting nationalistic fervor. Lots of "more oil" crap already out there dressed up in the flag
Like many Canadians, I fiercely love my country even though I've never felt I needed to fly the flag. But this is a moment where symbolism meets #defiance. Hands off my Canada. We will not be bullied. #TrueNorthStrongAndFree #TeamCanada

Are we conflating "nationalism" with "chauvanism" because I think we can afford to feel pride in the place we live. Otherwise, we would have moved to Sweden ages ago.
Funny how this trade war is one of very few things that SHOULD unite people across our country. Thanks DT? 😅 Does this open more trade with China? I suspect it will.
It's times like this I'm proud to be Canadian. I couldn't imagine my life di2n there, I'd be on the streets or some shit. I'm on AISH as it is. And, we all know what SOME people think about that.
I had a very similar thought this morning. I hope these tariffs don’t mean we’ll be seeing Canadian flags every where again…not enough distance from the freedom convoys in memory yet
It’s not Nationalism when we pull together when we are all under threat from an irrational and damaging attack. It’s human nature. Nationalism with out control is fine, libertarianism pretending to be Nationalism seeks to control and that’s what is ew .
Nationalism is super embarrassing. But if it's all that stands between us and getting swallowed up by an expansionist fascist nightmare empire? Then sign me up, baby! CA-NA-DA! CA-NA-DA!
Leader w/ more or less unchecked power using a confidently stated fabricated reason to try to take a smaller neighbour. Without for a second meaning to undermine awful suffering in Ukraine, even the good Americans have to deal today w/ being another big step toward being imperialist Russia West
I’m in the south of France for a few weeks and a headline they were just discussing on TV is “Pari perdant de Trump” which roughly means - Trump’s losing bet - when talking about the tariffs on Canada & Mexico. They have nothing good to say about him!
Cover this as a breach of trust and breach of our free trade contract. Think of all the government workers in the US being led out of their jobs. Those contracts meant nothing too. Litigation from every direction is likely the next defense. American taxpayer picking up the tab. All for politics.
@timothysnyder.bsky.social would say nationalism=bad, but patriotism=good (in an American context). I admire him for trying to make the distinction, but I’ve always been reticent to be a “patriotic Canadian” too because - well - we’re all human beings.
if you talk to folks from latin america who have had their communities destroyed by human rights violating mining companies, i think you'll see that "canada is a great country" is far from a universal consensus
ensuring human rights are respected is an international obligation - what you're suggesting is that if a canadian company goes to work in a country with poor human rights protections that canada has no obligation to keep them accountable, but i guess that's fine because we get money out of it
but also, the canadian government itself doesn't see it that way (Trudeau did bring in an ombudsperson who was supposed to help deal with this, but then they were immediately neutered when the 2021 election approached)
Cautious, yes. Critical when justified. Jingoism to be avoided like the plague. But in western democracies, promiscuous criticism of one's nation borders on nihilism.
I think it's the difference between wanting to make your country great, and wanting to make it great *again*
It's when your concept of greatness gets caught up in nostalgia for a time that never was, and for the disenfranchisement of significant fractions of the population, that things get ugly.
I think you can be deeply critical of your country, recognize its sordid past while still feeling pride in the nation. If it were such a gross place, my immigrant parents would have moved elsewhere. I've learned to be more patriotic like my politically-exiled parents.
Well I’m taking back our flag. I’m proud of our country and it’s time we stand together and stop bickering. The convoy crowd needs to be drowned out. We let them have their fun long enough.
Does anyone know how to train a friendly old dog to bite Americans where it hurts? I mean, Republicans in their wallet and Democrats where their balls should be
Man, they train you guys to hate doing your civic duty as a citizen so carefully the shell is almost seamless. Hate elections, hate protesting, hate new ideas'. Been in #HamOnt 20 yrs now, and the selfishness still astounds me.

I'm surprised everything you do isn't sponsored by Sephora 🎯

If we have to be nationalistic, let's be diverse, free, pro-democracy and anti-fascist. Stand up for LGBTQ+ and women's rights.
All the things we purport to be...
but i agree! most of the anti-immigration feelings in Canada are a response to abuse of the TFW and similar problems
I can only assume xenophobes believe they’re acting in self defense, at least to some extent

Then we got the convoy fucks and it became weird.
But it was still ok if you had a Canadian AND a Ukrainian flag.
And now I have no idea if it’s cool again or not.

Believing that Canada is a great country is supported by facts and international opinion.
Saying Canada is not perfect is also supported by facts.
A little flag waving is good for the collective soul.
