I know a major part of writing is making an unwieldy, shitty first draft, but god, there’s nothing I hate more than being in the middle of an unwieldy, shitty first draft

I just want my brilliant ideas to get onto the page as awesome as it is in my mind, but reality is just getting the ideas out and making it suck less later lol
I hate it when things like logic and common sense come in and just force me to rewrite the entire sequence that made me want to write the story in the first place. Like "wait... Yeah why ARE you stealing this thing...?"
We are the opposite I guess. The first draft is the first five minute in the octagon with it. It’s where you size each other up, look for tells and weaknesses. Strategize how your going to conquer it.
I don't get it either. Why would I intentionally set out to make something shit? I'd rather set out to make a first draft as close to great as I can and work on revising from there
I keep looking for a way to make it easier. My mom spent too much money my dad left her on new vacuum cleans. She wanted one that made vacuuming as easy as when Dad actually did the vacuuming.
Sort of like that.
We need prep-writers like chefs get prep cooks.
I don't get it. When I write, I go back and rewrite constantly. By the time I'm finished, my first draft isn't shitty. We all have our different approaches to writing. Just keep writing. Fuck all the theories of how it should be done. Do it your way!
I was hired once to fix a bad screenplay. It was so bad that in the end I realized that no matter how much shit I scrapped out of it that in the end I would still have a shit sandwich.
It's like cleaning out your closet. You have to put it all on the bed and make an unholy mess before you can decide you're really never going to wear the sparkly top that sheds sequins that your aunt gave you when you were 21. Meanwhile, you find a really cool pair of shoes.
It's all worth it.
That's why I have never been able to be a writer. I don't know how to make a shifty first draft. I go down rabbit holes of should this be "is" here or not
I agree with that, the rhythm of a piece is so important. I love that about social media, too, it forces you to forge a sentence or two that will carry a thought. Some people like Sodoku puzzles or whatever, I like trying to solve the puzzle of the perfect sentence
Agreed. It’s where I am now with my new wip but having just finished writing a novel in November that began with a horrendous first draft and ended up a story that I love, I keep reminding myself to trust the process.
I hate it so much, I haven't finished anything in years. I'm sincerely thinking of trying to write the second draft first just to see if I can trick myself into doing the writing that I need to do to stay sane.
Just make sure you put it in a folder called “Writing Exercises” and title it “Exercise 16: Make All the Wrong Narrative Choices.docx” in case you die before you finish editing and someone finds it.
I myself find that if it is a shit draft first, I will need multiple revises and edits. X.X the struggle is surreal. Keep pushing though, you got this. ^_^
I once wrote a thousand word paper on the subject of a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich. It was beyond horrendous, but I’m still amused by what I wrote. Isn’t that the point of writing?
finally someone understands. I fell out of writing for a long time, wanting to get back into it, but the dread of shitty first drafts are in the front of my mind and that makes my motivation go *poof*

It’s terrifying.
Doesn’t matter if it’s a book or magazine article, reaching the final draft is always a huge relief.
I can get stuck on just a paragraph and edit to death only to toss it out.
I find that social media posts help to focus the thoughts so I’m more succinct.
