I think it's because we don't have real civics courses in school so politics seems unrelated to our lives- which of course is absolutely wrong

Gerrymandering. Tennessee House and Senate have super majorities giving them the ability to gerrymander districts where it's impossible to vote out the Republican Congress person. That's why states need to break the super majorities to institute fair maps
