yeah demos, even by "third parties" can easily be faked or manipulated. While the Chinese have became quite good we should also avoid falling into a "missile gap" kind of mentality about their products lol

Trump wants to destroy Canada's auto industry, but we are still protecting the companies who will sell us out and move to the US. Try finding a mid-sized NA sedan these days. We need to find a way to get China to build vehicles here, to our safety standards, to diversify our manufacturing base.

Reminds me of the UK’s imperial preference system.
The captive imperial markets meant that UK industry experience enough competitive pressure, so that when it ended, UK industry was well behind the curve, never caught up, and much of it eventually collapsed.

The Chinese are making EVs that NA automakers have no interest in making, like the small sedan that would sell for just under $15k CDN. So nit only would I have to astronomically more for a Canadian EV with little road history, I won’t even be able to purchase the EV I want.

I heard an interesting explanation from @colenotcole.bsky.social recently about this: the Chinese are selling their EVs at a huge loss to gain market share & become a monopoly, so our tariffs are to protect our own industry. Thoughts?

Not entirely accurate because at least BYD makes a profit on its EVs, but I’m sure they’ve also sacrificed margin to gain market share, in part because the Chinese market is intensely competitive with a lot of EV makers vying for market share.

That competition has forced them to innovate in ways Western automakers haven’t, which is why they need protection through tariffs. I’m not opposed to some level of tariff, but instead of excluding Chinese EVs, we should be trying to entice BYD and others to set up factories ideally in Canada.
