i want to be exactly rich enough to buy a spacious, perfectly organized kitchen, where i’m not forced to stack all my pots and pans in a psychologically unmanageable way. and no richer

Knowing this exact battle lies ahead sometimes literally discourages me from cooking pasta. "Fuck that pot never comes out unless I empty the entire fucking cabinet. I'm making a sandwich"
This thread is cracking me up. My sister used to make fun of me for having a cheese grater drawer. That's all that was in it.
I'm not rich but I live in an old house with a HUGE kitchen and walk-in pantry. It's awesome.
From Ikea I purchased a piece with a butcher block top, underneath that two deep open shelves (24"?), and in between, three large, deep 3 drawers like you describe. I love that thing.
Colander inside the springform, strainers inside the colander, and whatever small thing I randomly toss in the cupboard before slamming the door shut, inside the strainers.
Having had this (and sold it - long story - not the wealth, but the kitchen) and now subject to not having it, I miss it. I don't know if I will have the physical space to do it again, but that's my goal. The kitchen. The wealth would be nice.
I have drawers, cabinets, everything and I still don't have room for my pots, skillets, cast iron pans/pots, multi-cooker, 12 different graters and mandolins, about 15 knives, an eternity of cutting boards, colanders etc etc. I don't think there's a kitchen big enough to keep it organized properly.
Oh God, the pots and pans thing—so spot on. I literally say to my husband, "Someday we will live in a place where the pots and pans aren't jammed into the bottom of our one small pantry closet." Lids spilling all over the place.
I have like 18 cabinets but the wife likes to do the organizing, which makes no sense because I do all the cooking. But yet I still have 3 things fall out while grabbing 1 item out of the only 4 things I ever use to cook with. Don’t get me started on drawers. 😳
So many practical wishes in this post & the comments. Id like to add something small. Standard toothbrush holders that are big enough to fit these modern, ergonomic, toothbrushes that are all thick at the base. That's been pissing me off for about 20 years! lol
If putting something away involves taking other things out so it can be nested or tucked in behind, we may just end up with a semi-permanent resident of the drying rack next to the sink.
We bought a house with a broken lazy Susan in the corner of the kitchen. I fixed it and now I hate that $&@#%. Damn pots migrate and somehow find a way to hit the wall. I’d move, but I’m afraid my wife and kids would find me eventually.
If we keep voting billionaires to look after the wellbeing of working people, I'm afraid your next kitchen will be under a bridge, with a wood stove for cooking and an oil lamp for reading at night.
My daughter took her panty and put all her dishes and small appliances in it. She uses her cupboards for food. It's so much more organized, and the small appliances are off the counter.
Does this include not having to store the odd/heavy ones in the oven? ‘Cause I’m down with not having to move the Dutch oven and griddle every time I want to use the oven…
I know, right? I don't understand why builders are still building homes with lower cabinets. I mean sure, under the sink & maybe one or two additional for small appliances etc., but otherwise all drawers. My kitchen is effectively 8'x 10' but functions great since I remodeled & added drawers.
I have the same shallow cabinets on the back side of my "pennisula" facing the dining room where I keep my crockpot and food processor etc. (I took out the wall between kitchen and dining in the remodel.) I put glass front cabinets above so it's like a built-in buffet and hutch.
My current house is the oldest one (100+ years old) that I've ever lived in but it's the only that has drawers below some of the counter tops and it's fantastic! Wish I had more drawers.
I just want enough to afford a decent small place to live single, eat good food and also be able to afford enjoying my free time reading the books, playing the video games, and listening to the music that I want to, hanging with my cats, a little extra for security, and the rest to give away
Idk, being able to cast one’s eyes around a complete shitshow of a kitchen and spying that the grater is PRECISELY where the potato peeler is, and adjusting accordingly is wonderful
For two reasons
It makes the potato peeler feel important, and pisses off the colander
I want to be rich enough to buy a spacious industrial kitchen that’s all metal and tile and you can hose everything down into a drain in the floor. None of that “homey” crap.
Rotating cabinet. Inside space is 3 sided that swivels so they are put away, and organized how you want, and you don't have to reach over your head to retrieve. The outside can look like any other cabinet. It's similar to a spice rotating cabinet, but larger. You can design it with a 3D mod.
I felt this all the way to my toes. I have to be very careful not to have the stack fall out and hit my toes as I try to get the right pot/pan with the lid in which is also in a precarious position in the cabinet 👍🏽
I feel your pain. I have a corner lower cabinet that really should have a lazy susan in it. It doesn't. Instead there are 2 door. There's a whole lot of open space for things to get lost. I realized I can actually fit thru the doors when I have to dig for something. 🙄
This is how I feel about my freezer. If I had a bigger fridge it would all fit. But I would need a bigger kitchen for a bigger fridge. And a bigger house for a bigger kitchen.
This captures something profound about our relationship with wealth: we often envision it not in terms of luxury, but in terms of reducing daily friction.
It's why seemingly minor quality-of-life improvements often deliver outsized emotional returns on investment.
I want to be rich enough to buy my house in cash so I will never have to worry about mortgage or anyone repossessing it. Then have a separate savings account where I can pay property taxes. I just want my house to be mine in entirety
I would happily accept my leaning tower if HexClad if my Tupperware cabinet would only abandon it’s evil plot to drive me to madness by consuming all matching components to produce and endless supply of containers and lids, none which fit one another . . .
I finally admitted defeat, tossed ALL the Tupperware & got 50 plastic quart containers from Amazon. Everything goes in them. No more matching sizes hunting lids. Peace✌️
I joke that I want to be wealthy enough to feed my friends dinner at my place, and make enough money to send them home with Tupperware that I don’t plan to see again.
If I’m really making bank, everyone gets Pyrex containers to go.
Tip: 3 and 4 pack Rubbermaid and Mccormick containers are sold at the $1.25 store. Good enough quality to feel good about sending it with others, cheap enough not to worry if you never seem em again.
You gotta build your dreams! I've been working on a kitchen renovation with Ikea stuff. All those late nights mindlessly playing with their planning tool and not really changing anything paid off! See my recent post, it's my latest source of Zen.
One time I made the mistake of actually having those cabinet organization people come and give me an estimate on adding like drawers and organizing bins/separators and such
And the estimate (with 50% off installation!) was an eye wateringly embarrassing 5-figures that I literally lol’ed at
I want to only be rich enough to fly commercial 1st class once a month to visit my 4 kids, and my mom, brother and sister and pay for a one BR apartment in a highrise with washer and dryer.
One could also ask for another husband than the one who thinks it’s okay to stack pots & pans on top of the fine wine glasses you once used to have. My best excuse for giving up drinking?
My partner moved in,with his 5 large additional appliances (air fryer, microwave, bread maker, slow cooker, and food processor) and absolutely CONSUMED my single-life perfectly organized kitchen.
I felt this post in my SOUL.
(We ended up buying an industrial shelf from Uline).
I think this is like expanding freeways, though. You end up with all this beautiful space and event fits, but it doesn't last long before you just get more stuff.
I cleaned up an old 27” bicycle wheel and hung it up near the ceiling, then got a bunch of S hooks to hang from the spokes and it makes a pretty good hanging rack for the colander and most of the pots & pans. Helps save space in our tiny kitchen.
Hang them above the sink.
A rectangle of 1x5s with 1x2s on the top surface. S few hooks into the 1x2s, hang pots and pans. Suspend with chains hooked into studs.
I shared your dream when I was younger, had it all planned out. A nice breezy open living quarter overlooking a cove with a perfect break point. Abalone shell mosaic stepping stones leading to the beach. Horses galloping...
I bought a dilapidated old farmhouse. There was only one outlet in the whole kitchen. There was the old brick chimney in the corner beside the fridge covered with fake brick. This is before and after.
I listen to them every morning, more or less. Great way to get a lot of news and international news in a very short amount of time. And yes, the British accents are wonderful to boot!
I hear you. I also want a kitchen where I have ample counter space and many many easily accessible cupboards because I love having lots of pretty dishes
Yeah me too; problem is, you immediately see another kitchen thing you *have* to have, figure out where you can squeeze it in, and that will inevitably result in … stacked pots and pans. 🤷🏼♀️
The best thing the previous owners of our house did is augment all the lower kitchen cabinets with rimmed shelves that slide in and out. I can never not have this again.
I am not rich by any means, but I did just get a new kitchen that is well thought out with enough space. and it truly is life changing. I mean this sincerely. I feel like I can breath and think!

Upright measuring cups. Hand mixer. Smooth glide.
You can do it!!
I have one drawer in my entire kitchen.
I was skeptical about them when we bought this house, but having drawers instead of cabinets is a HUGE game changer.
I can pull the whole thing out and REACH the things? Genius! 🤯

I live in a food-centric city and I believe there are very few things in life that show love more directly than cooking for people.

The tupperware/ plasticware cupboard? The trays with that one that unbalances all the rest?…
