In reality, people cannot change their sex. We use the word "immutable" for things like this that cannot change.
@davidjroth.bsky.social I'm excited to read this one because I once tried to read a Hitchens book somebody gave me for free while I was living in China. All I remember is he kept insisting that India was wrong to change "Bombay" to Mumbai and that he'd keep calling it "Bombay." Total dickweed.
I loved Hitchens when young and foolish (he was certainly a charismatic speaker) but I’m now convinced he wrote exactly 2 good pieces:
Mortality, written as he was dying, and his piece on waterboarding for vanity fair.
I enjoyed the retrospective and collation of New Athiests and “liberal thinker” but Baker uses Chait’s own argument at the end, both sides are extremists. But, like he says, these are more complex issues than can be formed into a political cudgel.
Yes. The New Atheists were an ugly bunch of people you wouldn't want to hang around. Some of the most closed minds you could encounter, and so willfully obnoxious. They made not only atheism but even science look bad. Sad that their dehumanizing way of treating others has been mainstreamed.
I used to be one! The product of living in the aughts when the religious right had the power and was having an ongoing apocalyptic meltdown at a society that increasingly didn't want them. I got better as I realized that the New Atheists didn't hate Christianity for the same reasons I do...
So the doofuses with soap boxes, who were used to paint all atheists as ravening monsters. This happened (conveniently) as America is becoming increasingly theocratic.
