I love One Piece so much and I gotta be honest, I read the manga and then pop in when other fans are telling me the anime is good for one section or another. I ONLY HAVE SO MUCH TIME AND I DO OCCASIONALLY HAVE TO PAY BILLS AND WORK.

I kinda wonder if they are actually anime fans or if they just like the predictable action formula of
Boy goes on adventure -> get defeated -> train -> defeat boss -> discover bigger boss -> restart adventure
+ lots of action eye candy.
I think they forget anime isn't a story genre but a medium.

The guy who tried to get me into One Piece explained that it takes til like, episode 400, for the "modern arc" to take shape. That's like if we had to wait til the Buu Saga for Goku to go Super Saiyan for the first time.

I don't know about the episodes, but the first arc that's not made up of smaller adventures is the Alabasta arc by chapter 150ish. Before then, the arcs were smaller in scale, surrounding smaller communities tied to one of the characters that'll join the crew.

And please don't forget that Dragonball Z is a sequel. Goku doesn't go Super Saiyan before chapter 318 by my research (google). Twice as long.

In any case, One Piece is a fine manga to start at any of the Arcs, Alabasta being a strong suggestion.
