i was working in palo alto at that ace hardware downtown in '18-'19 when the stupid waymo cars were beta testing in those lil dangerous streets and i remember almost getting hit by them several times. with their testers behind the wheel doing nothing but taking notes.
What would happen if, say, someone were to throw a brick at the self driving apparatus of one of these vehicles? Would it shut down? Asking for a friend
It'd probably just bounce off unfortunately. Those mechanisms seem pretty sturdy. It's a lot easier to Black Bloc and slash tires when they're parked at night I hear.
This is the part that continues to baffle me. Were residents of SF and the other beta-test cities asked about this beforehad? Did they have any say in it?
No, it was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission, a board of 5, in a vote where one person obstained and another used to be managing council at Cruise!
now to be fair the car being electric doesn’t really have anything to do with it, you could just as easily make a gas car autonomous, and the cruise cars have big ol’ lidar sensors on top that makes them easy to spot. What you need to watch out for are the teslas specifically
My point still stands because there are currently 0 gasoline engine cars that ship with auto drive in them. You have to manually add comma AI to them, so the chance that it will happen with a non-electric car is close to 0.
like consider that lidar is way better at identifying and avoiding obstacles versus normal optical cameras… and then consider that teslas do not have lidar lmao. At least if you saw a cruise car you could know it was autonomous and avoid it. You can’t ever be sure if a Tesla is being driven or not
one of the concepts that most "AI bad" media fails to present is that the problem, as ever, is that sociopathic wealthy people will be instructing software engineers on what these increasingly pseudo-sapient systems will be tasked with
the issue with AI is the same issue with hustle grindset dipshits: the medium of cognition is irrelevant when they're all programmed by braindead capitalist failsons
There is probably a better universe where AI is used for good and makes everyone's life better, but wow so we not live in it for the exact reasons you outlined and that is why we must kill it all with fire
I don't think "we" decided to let the robots do whatever they want though. I think there were specific "move fast & break things" PEOPLE who decided to let robots do whatever they want.

runs on smug
And I was mostly throwing shade at shitty teslas
Turns out we just decided it ourselves and let the robots do whatever they want
