hey it's cool. when you're wee tiny you expect your family to spit straight gospel. it takes a lot to convince your inner child that they are capable of either lying or being wrong.
Yeah nah. If I get the lucky bay leaf in the Christmas Soup, it better be the expensive type, and not just a gum leaf from one of Uncle George’s neighbour’s tree.
I really wonder whether you can genuinely tell the difference! Also, some people use it in every day cooking, so it's not really a "once a year festive meal" type flavouring. Sorry, don't mean to be a pedant though ✌️
I think it’s more that if an account has a ton of followers, even the dumbest joke they make will go over like crazy, leading to a site wide devaluation of humor
I had a jar with 35 year old bay leaves. They worked perfectly fine if you leave them simmering in the soup/stew/chili for a long while. I finally finished the jar and the other week found a pack .87oz for 1.99cdn at Safeway. Amazed.
Big leaves. The jar is kinda nostalgic now. must.. keep.
Walked into the Latino grocery store once to get cotija and immediately released they had 90% of my staples and every thing was 60-70% what I was used to paying.
Yup, especially since most of the major supermarket chains have seemed to decrease the amount of "no frills" brands over the years. Spices are he most obvious example of lower prices.
A friend has a laurel in her yard and asked if I wanted some, and I thought she'd come back with a few leaves but instead gave me a few branches. I keep meaning to break them off one by one and put them in a jar or something like a civilized person, but that's so much work so we just pluck as needed
I got that too. I have some Kaffir Lime trees by my house, which are the variety their leaves are used in Thai cooking and someone walking by asked me if they could take some leaves, then mentioned she had a Laurel tree and dropped off about half the amount you show.
When I lived in Folkestone Kent I discovered a huge tree in the park by the train station was a ‘Bay’ Tree. I pulled off a few leaves and put them in my pocket as I walked home one afternoon. I bent it in my hand and took a deep sniff and said ‘so THIS is what they are supposed to smell like’.
I got a jar for each spice like 10-15 years ago and I've just been constantly refilling them with stuff from the bulk spice section and bags like this.

I still use them for cooking, but I fear them as well.
we all got that kinda baggage.
I give up lol
