I love visiting the Grand Canyon in December. It is at its most glorious, in my mind, and so few people. I can sit for hours watching the ravens play in-flight.
The Abuelaβs will be burning cedar in the hogans.
I remember driving through one soltice and the air was filled with a hint of those hogans and I saw life in the desert as it had been and perhaps should be.
This is the closest I've ever gotten to the Grand Canyon. My mother used to paint it from the northern side and was given this little piece that I inherited.
I love it there in the winter. I was at the North Rim December 1995. The US Government was shut down. The State of Arizona, not wanting to lose tourism $, paid the NPS employees to work, but it was a skeleton crew. Normally the North Rim is closed in winter, but that winter had unusually little snow
and there were rumors the North Rim was unofficially open. I took my chances, left my friends (who wanted to visit the new Getty Museum in LA) and drove to the North Rim. βOpenβ but kind of frowned upon. The sole NPS employee at the outpost before the long road to the rim seemed unhappy about the
road barriers being open to travel but said something to the effect that youβre on your own. I drove to the point, and snow began to fall. Became heavier than I felt ok about and I decided to head back. Nobody else was there. About 20 miles from the log cabin where the NPS guy was. Well, a few miles
I into my return, along a tight curve, my car skidded and just slid off the road and into the ditch. Lucky to be unhurt, but my car was 100% unmovable. The only thing that kept me from panicking was the knowledge that a car had passed me heading *to* the rim. They were my only hope to get back. I
could not stay in my car to stay warm, as my car was barely visible from the road, and any driver in that increasing blizzard would have eyes only on the road. So I had to stand out in the road, hoping the car would return. 15 minutes later they did. Man and a woman. They saw me flag them down and
If you have a chance, have a meal at Bright Angel lodge or at the more ritzy El Tovar! It's worth it, than eating at a restaurant in town. The steakhouse has the best view in the evening, though.
Happy Winter solstice, Itβs beautiful country! I really do enjoy your pictures of the canyons. I live here but donβt go out to see them enough. π€·πΌββοΈ
My brother and his family visited over the Christmas holidays some years ago. We took them to see the Grand Canyonβ¦β¦and it was βfogged inβ. We all got to see a fairly unusual sight ~ waves of fog (clouds) washing UP and over the rim. But Iβd rather have been able to share a sunnier view of itβ¦π«€
Thanks and happy solstice to you too. As was said to me elsewhere, "This is the night when you can trust that any direction you go, you will be walking toward the dawn."
Good Morning and Happy Saturday!
Wishing you all a day filled with positivity, joy, and relaxation. Letβs make the most of this beautiful weekend! π
My baby girl will begin getting increasing incremental seconds, then minutes of daylight back in Alaska.
Also, beautiful pic βοΈ Hereβs the North Rim at sunrise, by yours truly.

Nice pic
That cedar may very well be 500 years old
Most spots on the river you really canβt see the rim.
Happy Winter Solstice to you and everyone else, too.
