I honestly do not understand liberal/progressive people and institutions who are still using X.
Can someone explain? I'm finding it very hard not to be angry.

It's an addiction and it's too hard to change those habits. Entertainment is the drug. Maybe the illusion of relevance social media provides?
Might as well read "The Sturmer. ", but just for the cartoons. 🙄
They believe that by attending klan rallies, they can change hearts and minds. They overestimate their self-importance.
In reality, they like feeding the hate machine.
The platform is just code. It existed pre-Musk.
It's DEFINITELY not making a profit so it's continued existence is a financial drain on Musk.
And, if one wants to CONFRONT racists & ignorance X is where they live.
I know it’s vitriolic chaos over there but they need real facts and news. Eventually, they may even believe real facts and news.
But yes, this is beyond the pale.
Some new arrivals on Bluesky:

@maklunginstitute.bsky.social
1. Large followings
2. Financial incentives
3. A lot of Americans don’t have alternatives. Especially true for Facebook, they don’t want to give up those contacts
I can’t do anything about them having an account. But I sure as anything won’t be promoting it.
I felt it too, until enough of the tribe ended up over here that I lost any desire to log back into that place
"How many of your friends and mutuals even see or respond to your posts now?"
you're a little too embedded in internet thinking. leaving or staying on X is a personal decision and i kinda wish we'd stop making it something else.
1. Got lots of followers on X (but those metrics now meaningless)
2. Want to persuade with other side (but by that logic, why not go on Truth social and Gab)
3. Researchers in some countries/languages much more active there (fairest point currently I think)
Much of the intl Long Covid community relies on Twitter Spaces to share science, experience, and support. Both for ad hoc and scheduled meetups.
Until BlueSky (or another platform) offers a similar feature, many will either stay on Twitter or keep bouncing between the platforms.
I think the first and second arguments are a fantasy.
For those in population health science, I don't understand how continued use of X is compatible with the aims of our discipline.
I'm trying hard to recognise that they will have important reasons, but the discomfort and and disappointment is hard to get past.
You may notice the Twitter icon sports a small modification. The mouseover text says, "No Twitter, No More".

IMO there's no convincing people who go out of their way to misinform themselves w/alternative realities. They have to change themselves.
But I feel like every conceivable threshold of decency has now been crossed. Do others just not feel the same discomfort compromising their values as I do?
I'm fully willing to accept my failings and try to be better, that's the only bar I set and most people can't even accept that.
I quit the moment the name was changed.
But, yeah, leaving was extremely difficult. I was very dependent on Twitter for my survival and success. But the moral cost became too high.
It’s a privately owned website, not a sovereign nation being occupied
We’re consumers providing content on these platforms- so use your power: chose where you consume/ provide that content
However, we got sucked into using platforms that exploited psychological weaknesses, and come up with nonsensical reasons for staying on them.
They're kidding themselves if they think that will make any difference to the right wing dominance of those platforms.
I have to admit, that leaving twitter meant I was in the social media wilderness for a while.
I recognise that I was not very nice on Twitter at times, and am sorry. I have worked hard to change!
But I don't believe that social media is a good way to do that. It doesn't foster open and curious communication. So I don't think my presence or otherwise helps contribute to a healthy dialogue.

Most discussion on social media are counter productive and reinforce prejudices.
This does not apply to Nazis. The moment you give a Nazi intellectual quarter, you have already lost.
