The other thing is that it’s a strategy formed in utter contempt of voters. After every single election Dems decide “we need to focus on pocketbook issues” - not because this message actually gets through, but because they hold voters in contempt and so grubby economic appeals sound savvy to them.

They think they lost the election because they more or less focused on the “democracy” and “fascism” arguments. It’s possible that’s one aspect of it, but it’s because people didn’t take it seriously, not because it wasn’t true. Now that it’s actually happening, perhaps they should point it out.
