let's ban landlords & house ppl instead of arresting them for being underpaid, & denied any health care or social services! https://wefightback2025.org into the streets nationwide Jan. 20, 2025 #inaugurationday
Idk if national media ever followed up, but after the Lahaina fire on Maui, landlords evicted existing tenants so they could collect thousands more in monthly rent from FEMA for housing fire survivors. But in some cases, they collected the money while their property sat vacant
I'm more suggesting that the broader community of Californians create reports as they hear about cases from those they know who are struggling - we're all in this together
This is such BS. This is a reason why we need to push corporations out of home ownership, because I'm sure they're the ones leading the charge on this.
Anyone that gets caught needs to pay triple the rent increase as damages plus legal fees. Hopefully every single landlord who has taken a rent like this gets caught, as California judges are not very lenient on this issue.
Itβs not an executive order, itβs a law. The price-gouging landlords are violating the law. I think the EO Newsom just signed prevents insurers from canceling fire victimsβ policies for a year but donβt quote me.
The fires just happened. Enforcement is slower. (They have to investigate individual cases, etc.) Theyβve already started making general statements about the law, and the California Atty General had a press conference.
Itβs not that it isnβt being enforced but people do need to report it. Even in the best of times, the state government may not have the resources to review every individual lease for price gouging.
One of the problems is people are so desperate to get into houses that theyβre willing to make an illegal bargain with the devil. One of our friends found a house that was $30,000 per mo with 2 years advance, only to be outbid by somebody offering $50,000 per mo and 3 years in advance.
Nah. He said what Luigi did didn't work. And what we're seeing after what he did is a bit like what happened in Japan following Shinzo Abe and his encounter with The Contraption.
I think the point is, it was the shot that was really heard around the world, but no one has continued to build a class war. Which is a real shame. Americans are lemmings.
Too bad Kamala isnβt AG anymore. These are probably the Rs that Tommy Tuberville feels so bad for, having to live under the awful Dem leadership. However, his state of AL is the third highest federally subsidized state in the nation. So bad that he lives in FL.
Under Penal Code Section 396, rent increases of more than 10% are prohibited in jurisdictions named in the emergency proclamation and in areas experiencing heightened housing demand resulting from the emergency.
They did it in New Orleans after Katrina. I knew one woman whose landlord actually put some builders in her apartment with her stuff still in it, while she was evacuated for the storm.
"It is illegal to raise the price of a host of items and services including lodging, food, gas and medical supplies more than 10 percent for 30 days after the declaration of an emergency in California" ... several owners were prosecuted here in Santa Rosa after our fires.
All revolution requires sacrifice. It is important to remember this. It doesn't have to be life that is sacrificed. Sometimes, it is ego. Other times, it is peace that is sacrificed. The choice is always ours. If the oppressors offer no peace, we cannot give it to them.
Maybe. But it does feel like Gen Z might be making up for the lost time with how they've embraced a more global community mindset compared to even my generation (millennials).
The ability to acknowledge and learn from one's mistakes is a quality we must all identify with. It is important not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Peace and Unity comrade.
Fascism is an extension of liberalism that emerges in capitalist economies that are in crisis. It is also explicitly anticommunist. It keeps workers from destroying the ruling class. Socialists and communists can't be fascists. If they were, they would no longer be socialists or communists.
They can't be the exact definition but authoritarian socialism in the way of Stalinism or Maoism was practically the same. Espousing nationalism, authoritarian, militarism and regressive conservative norms including regarding gender and sexuality.
The greatest enemy to socialism is greed. Our capitalist class exploits socialism for its own purposes. It is meant to benefit the proletariat, instead, it is used to suppress us.
I think of Soviet tanks crushing Czech resistance in 1968. In a tankieβs mind, only through authoritarian force and repression can economic fairness (communist utopia) be realized. Animal Farm is as good a book as any for refuting this nonsense.
But the capitalists in our country are terrible. There is no defense for their behavior. They must be educated through empathy on a level playing field.
The capitalists in any country are terrible and are often highly educated.
And aren't swayed by empathy but by general strikes, and other economic and political radical mobilisation and collective action.
Petite bourgoise capitalists are no threat as long as they remain honest and contribute. They only become a threat when they begin abusing social systems to their benefit. Take their toys away and they are just like you and I.
Also I'd argue a landlord or salesperson of basic necessities starting to overcharge because of crisis, or creating and enabling crises out of greed, is very much capitalism creating- and profiteering off of crisis.
And they don't need to big players abusing state resources and departments.
And by taking their toys away, don't you mean taking capital and capitalism away?
Because just because small players don't necessarily behave like big players doesn't mean the game is still a 'profits over people' racket, and it's the game that needs to addressed and abolished and not the player.
He should but I'm guessing he doesn't have the legal authority to do that, or he thinks he doesn't. Tbh I'm not sure he's in favor of renters rights in general.
Collect their names and turn them in to the CA DA. Price gouging is illegal in CA when a disaster has been declared. This is the only way to banish these scumbags from doing business in the state in the future.

From there, theyβll review cases and decide who to assign them to
Of course, itβs a big State, so expect it to take time
The governor of my state: "don't do these things."
My landlord and the cops: *does those things*
AG: π€·πΌ
It's their choice to prosecute.

What on EARTH will stop them in 2025?
Yeah...thats what I thought.

What you're assuming are laws, are not laws, they mere suggestions.
Please don't post like there is no recourse when there is, limited though it may be.
I am leaving these here for no reason at all π€
Who am I kidding? The revolution never ends, they will need to be reminded every few generations.
Stay strong, comrades, the light is shining in the darkness.
Unless we use Luigi as an effective organizing rally.

Too bad nobody can stop them. I mean... they could... they easily could stop them.
But they won't.
If we have no legal recourse, only illegal options are available.

Even the PRC has admitted he "made errors" that brought "great misfortune on the party and people."
what exactly do you think he was onto?π€¨
the other stuff, not so.
We don't need fascism with a socialist face to do what is needed
It has its origins in a schism in the UK communists party over khruschev's use of tanks to invade Hungary in 1956.
