SNL anniversary special had a tribute to Sinead O’Connor? Reminds me of when the Joe McCarthy/Roy Cohn Variety Hour did a celebration of Dalton Trumbo.

SNL50 did not call it a tribute to Sinead.
Social media made assumptions.
The documentary did address the Sinead controversy and they appear to have come around to realizing she was brave AF and completely in the right. Too little too late? Yes, but progress nonetheless.
Nah son - maybe this was L Mike's thank you for her controversial performance that catapulted SNL back into the limelight when everybody said it was dead?! That pope pic rip is part of everyone's pivotal '90's pop culture moments.
They had Costello sing it on the SNL 30th anniversary, backed by the Beastie Boys. And, they made plain reference to the earlier Costello incident for which he had been “banned for life.”
It was a lifeless cover that had me cringing. The only thing that could’ve maybe saved it would be Cyrus ripping a photo of Trump at the end but that would require Sinead-level balls.
Not an apt fantasy comparison. Lorne and SNL didn't try to ruin Sinead. The backlash was from the public not the show. If you watched the 50 years of SNL music doc you would have heard Lorne say that he respected the bravery of what she did. They just don't like surprises in general.
Lorne turned off the applause sign to leave her twisting in the wind, then trashed her in public in articles and on Charlie Rose, including taking a shot at the quality of her album.
They also had a tribute to her after her death, on Update or somewhere. Still, it's not appropriate. The way they spoke about her in the Joe Pesci episode was worse than anything else.
The cast made fun of O’Connor for her gesture on a later show. SNL took the public’s temperature after the episode, and jumped on the conservative bandwagon.
It was a tribute to Prince-one of SNL’s favorite musical guests. It was his version of that song. 🎸
But I’m sure they wanted to remind everyone about Sinead too.
I love, respect and miss both of them! 💜🤍🍀
The fact that Aubrey Plaza introduced the song after losing her husband made it all the more poignant and heartbreaking, so maybe just realize life is complicated sometimes? I think Sinéad would have approved of this performance.
Exactly. Figured the purple lights was a giveaway of that. Also, Miley sang the Prince lyrics: “it’s been 7 hours and 13 days” vs Sineads “7 hours/15 days” version.

And Prince was one of SNL’s favorite musical guests over the years.
💜🎸🤍
Go watch episodes of the show in the weeks after the pope incident. Michaels had the writers tear apart in skits and on Weekend Update.
Now, years later after Sinéad O’Connor was proven right, Michaels wants to rewrite his part in trying to destroy her. He is a pig
This is a distinct reversal.
But I’m sure they wanted to remind everyone about Sinead too.

Miley just reminded me how great Sinead's voice was
