Maybe get advertisers but they'd have to be better pretty strictly.

Then hire moderators to aggressively remove toxic content/users.

gonna guess because of shear volume some scroll by ads or product acclimations will get them some money. If they want to tier service with ads or ad free, again because of sheer volume money will be made. It's how that is used. payroll, growth, features and function. Is bluesky not for profit?

I think the best answer is to partner with the news industry to create the best news distribution and monetization platform in the world. Plenty of revenue to go around and a very contained and clean commercial strategy. @jay.bsky.team @rose.bsky.team

Definitely better to strike up deals now and make it into something where people can actually get news without algorithms pointing propaganda at them, and the news sources get something out of it so they can exist as something more than clickbait generators. I don't know how, but fingers crossed.

It can only work at scale with a technical and financial partnership that lets Bluesky be the platform it wants to be + get revenue to support its growth in return for allowing the news industry to build an infrastructure in the federated ecosystem that is optimized for distribution and monetization

Ideally a donation system before anything else. Wikipedia has stayed afloat for years. Time and again people have been proven to be more likely to give money if it isn't been treated as a visa towards things they already expect to have.
