I don’t think he owned 2 homes, he recently paid off his mortgage and was looking for home #2. But complaining about finances months and blaming it on minorities after this is wild

The date he gives for the beginning of his career downturn is 2019, which happens to be just before the entire performing arts industry came to a crashing halt, so it’s conceivable that this might have had something to do with it?

Other possible reasons: his style of writing may have gone out of vogue; he’s no longer a “young”/“emerging” composer; he may be having a run of bad luck in a very difficult business.

Mr. Okpebholo wrote a beautiful response, and then a second post that Andrew reached out to engage in a dialogue with him. I think Mr. Okpebholo gave an exceeding amount of grace and took on labor that should not be required of him and other people of color

At any rate, the idea that “DEI” is robbing him of the composing career to which he is entitled strikes me as far-fetched. Elsewhere, people have dug up statistics showing that he was in the 12th percentile for band performances from 2011-2022—surpassed by 102 white men, but only 10 others.

This whole thing just makes me so sad. We were at Peabody together and I premiered his piece! It’s really hard watching him continually dig himself deeper into this hole, entirely of his own doing.
