Anyone who thinks the NYC subways are scary does not ride the NYC subways. Or perhaps hasn't since the 1980s (and even then it wasn't as bad as people claimed).

I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier

I was okay with the fish heads and getting a seat
(No idea why the only gif I can find of this has this text. Really wish bsky would let us upload our own gifs already)
*they drunkenly decided to sit on the platform with their legs hanging over the edge.
Rural people are just terrified of minorities so they assume it must be dangerous.
Just because it was worse in 1980 doesn’t excuse it from being horrible now - especially in a city like NYC. It’s just a shame.

Dude interrupted our conversation. To offer suggestions.
I’m sure there are problems at times, but in general public transit in big cities has never been a problem for me.
The subways didn't feel any different than Chicago's L, and honestly, People were *nicer* in New York.
Maybe just because we were obvious tourists, dunno.
back in 1960’s in crowded subways, sometimes a man (usually in suit and tie) would grope…So I employed hatpin to wherever and spike heel to top of offender’s foot. worked well.
I have seen people have medical emergencies and be saved by fellow passengers..
Not scary, and kind of entertaining at times
I'm still here, unscathed.
Today is nothing like that.
But the people who think it’s “The Warriors” down there have either never ridden the subway in their lives, or haven’t ridden it since 1978.
