There’s a slight reluctance to agree with her here. I mean, despite much of that war was fought by Britain alone, when America did finally enter the war and helped Britain and Russia win the war and beat the Nazis. Somehow they’ve still managed to take over America!!!
Oh I dunno. Like 80 years ago we had the sense and sense of hopefulness to cast the Conservatives into outer darkness for five years or so. We still have our moments.
She's not talking of the swathes of folk across the nation happily embracing fascism is she?! She means us, people who think diversity and inclusion is probably a good thing....😳
She's still not updated her profile picture with something more recent then. I am not saying it is old, but it may have been scanned in after having the camera film developed at Snappy Snaps.
Lol, if we said something like that, she'd accuse us of "doing Britain down". They keep saying the newspaper industry is dying, yet this bad faith "journalism" just keeps going on and on... like some brain-eating zombie.
Ah, the Second World War, perhaps our finest hour, you know, when Britons fought fascists rather than electing them. She's kinda right, but not in the way she thinks...
the same paper has this billboard around the country, however they and the mail are the cause and hacks like pearson and pieces of shit like farage are the parasites that fuel the prejudice. The question on the poster itself is just a dog whistle for xenophobes and racists.
TBF AP is a rancid ‘journalist’ (for this read opinionated ‘influencer’, for a rancid ‘newspaper’) who, perhaps, has contributed a fair bit to Britain’s ‘lack of worthiness’. FFS. She doesn’t have my ear.
Why do some Telegraph journalists run the country down so much. If they are so bothered about ex-servicemen, why do we still need Help for Heroes etc after 14 years of Conservative Governments. Ex-servicemen shouldn't need charity.
My dad was one. He got shrapnel in his back. His mate behind was killed. His mate in front was unharmed. Who was the hero? On VE day, mum joined on the celebrations on the street, but she knew dad was in hospital in Naples. He came home, he was quiet about the war and glad of European integration.
What Pearson forgets is that when she mentions the sacrifice of the fallen, it was to defeat fascism but she's welcoming it back. No doubt the irony is lost on her.
And then they voted in even higher numbers for Labour in 1951, only to lose the election (not the popular vote) because of the archaic, stupid First Past the Post voting system
When you happen to agree with a headline but probably not the reasons (I don’t know this person, but none of my family died, or risked death, for us to elect a fascist)
Having been born to older parents, largely because the war interfered with romance a tad, and having grown up surrounded by people who did serve, and whose friends and families often "sacrificed", I know exactly what they would think of Pearson and her ilk.
Interesting that she’s so different visually from her publicity shot. Think there’s also a large gap between her actual intelligence and her perceived intelligence.
and she helped create it- dumbing down of media, undermining schools & role of
education, attacking parliament, creating division & conflict, pro-brexit, anti tolerance & respect, corporatist..
oh- & well done to her for telling current soldiers their suffering and commitment isn’t worth it
She's not wrong.
The fnvkwits who vote for Reform have learnt nothing.
As a nation, we have failed to learn from the past. And unlike Americans, it came very close to home.
What is the point of armistice day, VE day when enough of us believe in facism?
Comments
I doubt that is the thrust of Pearson's diatribe.🙄
Won the popular vote. INCREASED the numbers voting for Labour.
Defeated by the archaic 18th Century voting system call First Past the Post 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Hitler would be cheering us on if he were alive today.
Ah, where to begin? I read your VE Day column with all the mixed emotions one might experience while slowly being dunked into a vat of nostalgia, grievance, and not-so-veiled cultural warfare.

What a surprise.
They went home and got on with ordinary jobs and tried to forget.
