This is actually my take, even as a democratic socialist! The process towards the American ideal is just that, a process. We may never get there! But for all the horrid things in our story, there are beautiful moments of promise. It’s infuriating that they see this promise as an undesirable farce.

It’s corny to admit to the point where I feel like a rube for saying it, but I do love this country. When it’s able to live up to its promises there’s no better idea out there. Too many people lose sight of that.

I'm with you. If you take the most expansive view of what the founders wrote down - that absolutely everyone has a right to be who they want and strive for their own goals - it the best system written down, and despite many, many flaws, we live it far better than most other countries.

A friend of mine is a woman with a masters degree in engineering and works for the foreign service and when she meets counterparts in other countries they are baffled that she's the wrong gender, ethnicity, and educational background for a diplomat. It is actually real, even if there's work to do.

America, at its best, is an inspiring thing. Over the course of my life I have watched the worst inhabitants of this great land redefine loving your country as something that bears no resemblance to what it really is and then burn it down. It’s the greatest betrayal of my life.

I truly think these people don’t actually “love America” and are either solipsistically indifferent to it at best or deeply hate/resent it at worst. Their concept of “patriotism” is a fetishistic reverence of an American dream where they hold power and everyone who tells them “no” will be sorry.

I don’t really know what’s on the other side of these next four years, but I know it’s going to involve a lot of rebuilding. I hope that maybe in doing that we’ll all be able to leave an America for the next generation that can live up to the promise of the place. There’s still good bones here.
