I can see lawsuits from older people claiming ageism and EU law will protect them. Step forward, but Starmer needs to grow a pair and get UK back into EU without all the right-wing rhetoric he has adopted over Brexit
Quite, racists assume all scientists are white. Of course, predominantly they are because of systemic racism in education, hence the importance of DEI, but that's OK, President Musk has fixed it for the US.
It’s divide & conquer. Using the sector with the most public sympathy—“It’s good for the young’uns!”—as a wedge to open the door for deeper ties later. But older pro-EU Brits won’t just be sidelined for the ‘greater good.’ Jog on! 🇬🇧💪🇪🇺 #Brexit #Politics #EU #UK
When I saw the numbers both about Brexit and US 2016 trump elections, and I saw that like ~45% of americans didn’t even vote — you have no idea how angry I was.
Here I am, literally in a dictatorship where my vote doesn’t count, all is rigged 100%, yet ppl in democracies don’t even bother!!!🤬😤
When you say “finally” I hope you mean “the long game he’s playing now starts paying off.” This is not a performance, this is a lesson in tactics and he’s an expert.
Democrats need to get on TV and tell mega. Social securities only been around for 89 years. So how would somebody get it for a 100 years or 300 years? Talk to them like they're five years old.
Will be interesting to see how many of the caveats survive contact with negotiations on other matters - probably a good idea to put them in, to allow them to be eased later.
I've said all along that the way to move closer to our European partners again is a step-by-step process across many different areas of alignment. It is NOT 'Hey, let's re-run that divisive referendum again right now!'. Starmer is doing this in exactly the right way.
We really need France as an ally at the moment. When it comes to European defence the French are far more operationally and technically independent of the USA
The IHS introduced by the Tories should be scrapped. It’s ridiculous for young people to pay almost 1000 quid/year. They could have an agreement with the respective E11 European Health Forms as done in the past. @labouruk.bsky.social if you could relay the message to your Tory boss it will help.
Any move in the right direction is welcome, but why was Yvette Cooper touring the TV studios a couple of weeks ago ruling out any sort of scheme?
Don't they have a 'grid' that's supposed to stop them looking like a bunch of amateurs who don't know if they're coming or going?
I am want my freedom of movement returned! I voted to remain in E.U. I want to travel without restrictions, I certainly won’t be travelling to USA or staying in Trump hotels or buying teslas! 🌻🌻🌻
There was an excellent called Erasmus and many other schemes including access to free tertiary education, cheap train travel and the chance to live and study in multiple countries….then we suddenly threw it away …#rejointheEU
Who knows how this will be received by Farage and co?
9 years on, sadly, I still don't see any Brexit benefits.
As you say, this is perhaps a small step towards regaining some of what we had before the 2016 referendum.
Personally, I just want serious grown ups in EU and UK to improve life for all
The details show a scheme wrapped in a straight jacket. The EU is being more generous than the UK. It should be an equal scheme. This is not. And let's not fall into the "it's a beginning, alleluia" mode.
Leadership is about making difficult choices and persuading people you've made the right choice.
Any decision is going to be unpopular with some people, and as history tells us, Brexit is a very devisive topic
It is and with our awful media it will be for the foreseeable future. We were a pain in the arse as a member state why on earth does anyone think the EU27 would welcome us back until the people who did this are consigned to the dustbins of history.
That's my view too, Starmer didn't create this mess, he campaigned against Leave and backed the People's Vote but he's accepted the god awful reality of our situation. I knew the day we finally left in January 2020 that the way back was going to be long and hard.
I don’t know, but I imagine Starmer has been working on this behind the scenes for some time. Just because he doesn’t announce his every move to the press, they think nothing is happening. A step in the right direction
People seem to conveniently forget that the BBC & nearly all press in the UK is far right & Russian owned. They eviscerate Labour & the Left for anything! Openly going against the racists is very risky.
Just to say this boomer (I hate these daft descriptions) didn't vote for this bollocks. I loved being an EU citizen, Europe is our continent, it's who we are, just hope I'm still around when we eventually return.
It's not about You. Boomer isn't a description of age. It's about mindset. It's about those who had every advantage & are still bitter & want to pull the ladder up behind them.
Just as gammon isn't a physical description it's an attitude.
Especially with the UK's electoral system. The Tories rule this country 70% of the time, so if they are against something it takes a lot of effort to make it happen.
Can they offer pensioner mobility or maybe even a 6 months of our choosing mobility scheme to replace Schengen? After all EU citizens have that already in the UK.
Finally??
The Labour govt has made huge strides and improvements in the last 8-9 months. If he sorts this out too it would be incredible. Contrast with the last 8 years of inaction, chaos and ineptitude and it’s almost miraculous.
To everyone going this is good but we need to rejoin. Yeah we do but stop whining & be realistic. Brexshit Britain divorced Europe & treated them like shit. They rightly don't trust the UK & besides other shit to deal with than an influx of miserable English people again.
At the next election, Labour won't have the advantage of people voting against the Tories. If they don't demonstrate genuine progress, the tories and reform will eat their lunch. This is why many want Labour to go further, quicker so they can show progress and win a second term in power.
So get involved. Make them sit up. People are prickly & fickle. At least Starmer has a soul & as far as I know is not a Russian asset like Boris "The Bellend" Johnson
We need to understand that the best leaders do need our help. They're in the snake pit & scared They need to know they have support
It's not about complaining no matter what Labour do; it's about valid concerns regarding their progress & messaging. So far, progress has appeared slow, partly because their messaging has been so 'goddamn' poor. I, for one, want them to be bolder to counter Reform.
I don’t understand the paying of the NHS surcharge but receiving none of the benefits bit for those coming here. Surely paying the surcharge entitles them to benefits, or some? Like having an accident & going to A&E?
It's a beginning, however only a full return to the EU will solve this country's problems given the Americans retreat from Europe. Along with Europe we need to establish the Euro as the words default currently, the Dollar can no longer be the world's default currency.
I'd be against this on principle. Either rejoin the EU or not but this sort of hallway house disenfranchises millions who couldn't access the scheme on age.
Yaaaaay! Thanks to all who have lobbied and worked to achieve this - I am delighted for the young people - they deserve all the opportunities this will offer them
Delighted to hear! But, it's deeply frustrating that it's only open to the youngest. We would all benefit and many yearn for a return to the freedom to travel through the EU unfettered that was taken from us through a now discredited political process.
Excellent. The current employment situation here is dire though. Literally 2000 applicants for a retail job and companies closing vacancies after 3 hours cos they already have 150 applicants ( job centre source). Needs careful managing to avoid youngsters travelling then getting exploited/ stranded
Now we need retired people's mobility. Just when I have the time AND money to travel I'm locked out of a huge block of countries if I want to do slow travel with short hops on buses and trains taking more than 90 days.
Little by little, piece by piece. When people realise (with heads clear from the fumes of nostalgic, nationalist rhetoric) that the things coming back into play either improve or make zero difference to their lives, they’ll question why anyone would’ve wanted to take them away in the first place.
This, to me at least, appears to be throwing a bone to those of us demanding a return to the FOM, and the EU. It will be capped. Increased tuition fees for non Brits, and health service contributions up front. The strings attached should be rejected by the EU, IMO.
It's a start, the strings that appear to be attached to it are nasty strings to excite Gammons. But fundamentally, the people who were too young to vote in 2016 should not be held hostage to the votes of the bigoted and the dead.
Many of them want others dead. I personally don't fear death & consider it a blessed reprieve. What I usually wish on truly evil people is a very, very, very long long & deeply unhappy life.
Starmer will do everything in a measured manner, without hype or pageantry.
This feels like his way - hopefully time will demonstrate that he took us back onto the EU quietly, with no rushing, and getting it right first time.
I agree - I think he is a good man whose measured style clashes with the ridiculous 24hr news cycle. It is so refreshing to have a serious person in charge, rather than someone with a degree in PR. Whatever that entails.
Finally, young Brits can go and spend a couple of summers in Greece or Croatia again as holiday reps and be far more culturally enriched by the experience.
Utter rubbish. A costly no gain scheme except for foreign students that want free access to our adult education system that UK students have to take out loans for. We must not get fobbed off with this RW rubbish and demend full return entry of the UK to the EU.
I’m 76 and so do I - but moving too quickly will be portrayed as crawling to Europe & all that nonsense.
Strangely the tangerine may have given impetus to re establishing closer ties between the UK & the EU by making it clear that the U.S. under him is an unreliable ally, he encourages the process.
Little steps. Can you imagine the outrage from the Brexit mob if there were no restrictions? My guess is they'll be gradually and quietly eased, especially as the gangsters in the White House drive all European nations into ever closer co-operation again.
Is he that stubborn not to realise that Brexit was supported by Russia and the US so that they could destabilise Europe. Keef needs to get us back into the EU a.s.a.p, otherwise we are cannon fodder for the Super Powers
Brilliant news. It will be great to see young Europeans in the U.K. - and how wonderful that young Brits can find out why European countries are so important to the U.K.

Oh wait.
You mean the WHITE ONES.
Oh that's okay then... 🤨
Stop with this ageism of 18-30, as if people over 30 are not people 😅
About 35% shouldn’t command the rest 65%, this isn’t how democracies suppose to work!
And yes, look up the numbers, only a third was for Brexit, the rest against or didn’t vote!
Back in 2019 when asked what they would do now would have been a vote for Remain
Here I am, literally in a dictatorship where my vote doesn’t count, all is rigged 100%, yet ppl in democracies don’t even bother!!!🤬😤
Lovely.
Don't they have a 'grid' that's supposed to stop them looking like a bunch of amateurs who don't know if they're coming or going?
I want my freedom of movement back.
I want a confirmatory referendum now that the Brexit lies have been exposed.
But still welcome news. And a step towards rebuilding trust in a relationship broken by grifters, liars and racists.
A world in crisis. USA gone rogue. Stronger together #Breturn
9 years on, sadly, I still don't see any Brexit benefits.

Celebrate the freedom of the youth & go & whine at the bigots & bullies who took your rights away.
Also people have to get to know other generations & cultures. We've been atomized as a society.
Defy Divide & Conquer with Community & Love.
Maybe stop supporting these misery rags?
Still tax corps & billionaires till they bleed.
Entitled boomers going yeah great for the youth BUT...
Everything before the but is bullshit.
Stop complaining & get active in politics. Misery loves company tho.
Just as gammon isn't a physical description it's an attitude.
If it doesn't apply don't take offence.
Still has some harsh restrictions on numbers , but hopefully these can be relaxed.
Young people were overwhelmingly against #Brexit so why should they suffer from the idiocy of old people
The Labour govt has made huge strides and improvements in the last 8-9 months. If he sorts this out too it would be incredible. Contrast with the last 8 years of inaction, chaos and ineptitude and it’s almost miraculous.
You're hardly selling UK
You do better.
We need to understand that the best leaders do need our help. They're in the snake pit & scared They need to know they have support
(no guess, I've just read the article...😏)
Sign here people...... free foreign travel to Europe included AND you get free clothing, free food, free accommodation..... and a gun!
a) see how limited & shit it is
b) keep pushing for equal FoM rights for ALL.
Especially if - hopefully - it helps underline the case for further steps back from Brexshit.
They already have electric scooters!
This feels like his way - hopefully time will demonstrate that he took us back onto the EU quietly, with no rushing, and getting it right first time.
That suddenly ended with Labour's election victory last July and, the same media now just don't know what to do.
Hence, they keep trying to manufacture Labour psychodrama....
Strangely the tangerine may have given impetus to re establishing closer ties between the UK & the EU by making it clear that the U.S. under him is an unreliable ally, he encourages the process.
But we're working on it. I'm back next month for another chat with the Immigration and Naturalization Dept. and others.
An oldie who wants to enjoy a bit of warmth, travel and culture.
An awful way to signal good intent towards the EU.
