Republicans are jealous that they can't get themselves out from under a crazed jackal driving their car off a cliff.
It's not a coronation. I'd also argue it's a rare moment when anyone in politics doesn't double or triple down on something & can unselfishly admit that the course must be changed.
We Democrats already voted in a general and a primary election fully aware that the person "backing up" President Biden would be Vice President Harris. The idea that this transition to a Harris candidacy is a coronation is ludicrous. Please get over your fear of the "scary woman," okay?
I really want to punch this kind of both-sides-ism in the GD nose. I know it’s wrong but MAN it would feel good to bop their muppetty schnozz.
The transparency of the “we don’t care we just want clout” crowd is painful to watch.
And the country deserves an intelligent, sane leader not a narcissistic criminal psychopath and his sycophants, but they don’t want to write that story either.
I suspended my subscription for three months and sent them a message that it would become permanent if they didn't get their act together by the end of the summer
Glad to, though I barely read them these days they do so little decent journalism. We do subscribe to Talking Points Memo, which is doing good journalism on a shoestring.
I remember they had to fly him to Antarctica to convince him that climate change was happening. Maybe hire someone who can figure that out without a huge business expense next time.
Hold on. I too am now very skeptical, & some "deep dives" and long contemplation are required. I expect the Times to send me on a hardship junket to Tahiti to determine the truth of the matter.
Remember when he tried to casually put in a column that “the Nazis called Jews bedbugs” and you could see from the linked source that he’d just searched for “bedbug”?
I love it when people who only want the worst for me suddenly pretend to care about my needs; because no one is so stupid as he who has convinced himself that he's outsmarting you.
Yeah, when people who almost never have your best interest at heart argue for a thing, you can be pretty sure that it's not what you actually want. See also George Fucking Will:
As in so many other aspects of Politics on both sides of the Atlantic, this is just “Columnists deserved a Massive Bundle, not something it’s hard to write entertaining copy about.”
Interesting take. Speaking of coronations, I do wonder how Bret felt about TFG declaring himself a dictator on day one and not participating in any GOP primary debates. Sounds a bit monarchy-like to me.
Btw I really don’t care what Bret thinks; do you?
This concern trolling from the right is nauseating, as if any of them give a single, solitary fuck about Dem voters' rights. We're just supposed to pretend voter suppression isn't one of the four pillars of modern conservatism?
He had pre-written the entire remaining six weeks of the campaign! He met all his deadlines (ie write three 300 word columns) and was ready to hit the brunches and cocktail parties! All ruined!
Why wasn't Biden stepping aside not utter chaos like we all planned when we demanded he step down! It was supposed to be chaos! This smooth transition isn't interesting to write about and robs us of a month of shitting on democrats for being unorganized idiots! This doesn't help the GOP at all!
It's like they captured a member of the Whiner Family from early 80s SNL and kept him in a criticism-proof Skinner box in the basement for the last 40 years.
Kind of ironic that Doug Whiner ( why did they have to call him Doug) was played by Joe Piscopo who would later devolve into an actual right wing whiner.
Hell, Bret Stephens is not really looking out for the interests of the average American citizen. The NYT news outlet is becoming more of a perversity of news journalism than Fox News is currently.
Democrats were and are still free to make it a contest. But surely the past 72 hours have made it clear that there is just zero appetite for that within the party. Even if we let a Joe Manchin be the Washington Generals for Kamala to stomp it would still be a coronation.
The contest only appeals to politics wonks with an idealistic view of a civilized contest in the great marketplace of ideas. For average voters a united party quickly backing a single candidate is a much better look
It’s a momentous shift when we stopped posting idiotic Twitter posts and laughed at them and started posting NYT opinion headlines and laughing at them.
Media pinheads scolding Democrats for refusing to give them a click-bait chaos convention is just too precious. Do they really think they're fooling anyone by trying to couch it in terms of "the voters deserved" a week of Dems in disarray?
That is a dude who's hands never had to touch an NYC turnstile much less a days worth of hard work. If he's ever eaten a chopped cheese that didn't come out of a box, I'll vote down ticket republican.
I wonder, is it an artifact of your weird primary system that so many outsiders think that they are entitled to having a say in the parties' internal affairs?
Fair question. I don't know. Maybe? That's far from our only electorally weird thing... 😄
I think it's also an American thing that we all tend to think we're entitled to have a say on everything. So there may be more than one uniquely American phenomenon at work here.
And as far as concern for the Democratic party goes, this sounds little better than "The Democratic party deserved haemorrhoids, not a well-adjusted stomach"

Instead of reporting on the football game / facts, they just write armchair theories about second guessing the coach.

And we appreciate those more than I can say, really, every time someone does it's a true public service
There are at least a couple of them, but this one seems to be the most comprehensive.

sorry, let me check the name real quick
And we end up with Bedbug.

I voted!
Passing this along to your favorite English teacher, beloved.
Out of touch would imply he was even looking.
