I used to do this with film prof across the hall from my work study. Guy wasn’t even my professor until later. He liked a Stevie Ray Vaughan shirt I was wearing, and would help me skim 10 minutes from my work study just by shooting the shit during office hours as long as his students didn’t drop in.

I am teaching 140 student (with 2 TA) intro lecture this Fall, and I offer 2 points extra credit on final grade if a student comes to speak with me, about anything, for 15-20 mins. Usually we end up talking music, sports, or family. Its delightful - and I hope encourages them to visit their profs.

Sign of a good teacher too. It’s been 25 years now so I don’t remember all of my profs clearly, but I will never forget the ones that made me want to stop by during office hours to talk about things that reminded me of their class. Or what they taught me.

Kind of depends on the class -- big intro level survey classes are a lot more likely to have office hours with a TA who is probably dealing with a number of students that are struggling and may be less inclined to just shoot the shit
