It's only good when it's an MMO where you can specialise as a blacksmith and gain xp and gold by helping everyone else out with broken equipment without having to do all the stressful combat and dungeon stuff.
The only way any video game should have consumables as the main combat options is if they're so abundantly available that you end up selling a lot of them. If you collect 10,000 crossbow bolts in RuneScape, you're set. If you find a gun in Fallout, it's useless after 3 shots without duplicates.
I like how Metro Exodus does it. You just have to maintain the weapon otherwise it won't work right. It still works, but it will jam and stuff. As for swords maybe they get dull and need sharpened like in Kingdom come Deliverance.
I played through Drakkhen a while ago. Game just has weapons and armor randomly break. And the best sword in the game costs 1 million jade so it's really not worth the effort to go for it at all
I'm fine with weapon durability when it isn't stupidly implemented and makes sense in the game, think Dark Souls 3 vs how bad it is in 2. But for the love of all that is unholy, can farming games not put tool durability in, please?
Such a conundrum! It depends on the game. In an RPG, depending on the other mechanics, it may be more immersive. But if the mechanics are already unrealistic, like say BOTW, then nah.
I've been playing tears of the kingdom this past month, great game I've really enjoyed myself
it would be SO much better if the weapons simply did not break (the master sword still dies like . _ . )
it does have fuse that can help patch it up but it would be so much nicer if it simply wasnt there
I just hate weapons that don't even last the whole/ or half of an encounter and you have to repair them mid fight MULTIPLE times. That's not fun, really fucking annoying.
I put up with it in Tears of the Kingdom and even grew to “like” it there, thanks to the combining weapons mechanic. But otherwise, I completely get you. It’s really annoying and takes back enjoyment of the game. Fire Emblem is different because they last longer than you think every time lol
My favorite video game infuriation is the inability to complain.
“Wow, I have a 15-foot tall alien warrior in front of me and you’re calling a machine gun that shoots slightly more colorful bullets than my infinite pistol an upgrade. Thanks for the 30 rounds, a-hole” George Carlin voice.
Send me to save the world, let me just drop right in with what could be carried in to a stop at the local swimming pool for an afternoon of fun with a towel and what’s this? A fanny pack? Thanks so much, governments of Earth! I can do this all night, been gaming since 1981.
Some of you might be new to the club so I’ll do something more relevant. If you didn’t experience or feel the rush of Link diving into God-knows-what in TotK at the beginning of the game, no, CoD doesn’t validate you, hang up your Gamer Card.
Everyone kept telling me Breath of the Wild was an amazing game. I never found out because my weapons kept breaking after 2 or 3 fights & I was stuck using random sticks. Threw in the towel after about an hour
It was quite well done in BG1 by making it a key part of the story.
The (manufactured) iron crisis that you end up investigating means that weapons are made with lower quality metals and therefore break much easier.
Unless they're magic weapons, in which case they're impervious to wearing out.
Portal knights had the best (of the worst) system I've played of a survival/crafter game. The weapon or tool didn't break, it just got weaker and you just had to press a button to repair or sharpen that didn't even require resources.
I might be confusing this with Dragon Quest Builder tho. Hahaha
For a game where mining/building is its core. They lasted a while too before "breaking"
Pretty sure it was portal knight. I remember making duplicate weapons for DQ Builder. Ugh. Portal knight was cute & fun multiplayer with my kids. Still think of it often for being a minecraft knockoff. Haha
Yeah didn't like tat aspect in the new Zelda games for example. I'm a hoarder by nature, stop taking away my stuff just to remake/refind it constantly (or at least make it last longer! xD)
Even the durability in Dark Souls and the early Diablo games were more lenient.
Absolutely hate this 😩 weight limitations as well, I have poor inventory management and like to hoard everything I find 😭 what if I need this piece of fluff I found later down the line!
I find myself not being AS irritated when it happens in a game where weapons are plentiful and are just laying around, like in BotW or the Indiana Jones game. But when it's a game where you have to go somewhere to repair your broken weapons? I'm out.
Yeah I had to really go into BOTW and TOTK looking at them as new Zelda experiences, because the minute I compare them to everything else prior in the franchise, I start feeling severe disappointment. It's been a ride for me and that franchise.
That is a fair criticism but it brought an interesting element to the game. Am I going to beat you to death with a stick or are you worth a wack with this amazing weapon.
I don't mind it in Botw/TotK just because of how abundant weapons are. I prefer non-permanent breakage like NV where you can maintain/fix your favorite weapons. Permanent weapon loss in games where weapons are a valuable resource is nonsense to me.
I guess I can handle it if I’m really into a game (Fire Emblem: Three Houses I love and it has it) but yeah most of the time I just hate it tbh 😂 I’m not a huge fan of BOTW 😂
At least with New Vegas, you could feed similar weapons to a main/modded one to repair it. I’d like to see that system in more games that use weapon durability.
Playing KCD I see, when you learn how to use the grindstone and stock up on repair kits it's not even close to being an issue, also getting certain perks are key to making everything last
In one of the recent Fire Emblem games, they got rid of the weapon durability system. And then in the very next one, they bought it back, like WHYYYYYYY 😭
Hope you have a blast! Game is art. It’s like Bloodborne and Sekiro had a Gothic Pinocchio baby with a super unique weapon crafting system, god tier music, fashion souls, and even a pettable cat (if you play your cards right) 🙌
True, but one time when I was in the Painted World, Geralt's silver sword got damaged and I didn't have any kits to repair it so I was forced to complete that quest with a sword dealing less damage until I could leave.
Tis one of the reasons I'm not big on new Zelda 😂 I don't want to carry around 15 weapons with a few swings a piece to get through a boss encounter. is just not fun. Then I get to good to use syndrome with my best stuff because I don't want it breaking and I can't even repair it 😭
agree. The only thing I loved about the two new games is that u can make link pretty much shirtless (aka clothing customisation) but thats about it. Also the rauru's arm in tears of the kingdom. Gameplay wise I dont like it.
I can handle the durability in like WoW, but the durability in a game like Breath of the Wild where the weapons early on break easily is why I couldn’t get into it.
I’ve heard good arguments for it but at the end of the day, it ruins the feeling of finding a cool new weapon when you remember moments later that it will be gone very soon. If it makes the player feel bad it is a bad mechanic!
Is that a stalker 2 dig? Because I agree actually, durability being a factor is good but using it as a substantial difficulty modifier rather than an immersion oriented mechanic that has a knock on effect of increased difficulty is something I don't prefer.
I like some of the things those games try, but I feel like the only reason they make the weapons break is because without that tension knowing your gear will break or the master sword will run out of batteries, their base level encounters and combat just isn’t that fun or challenging.
It's one of those mechanics that never seems to find the right balance.
Either it's so negligible to be basically pointless (From Soft games) or so severe as to be ridiculous and discourages use of good weapons (Fallout, Fire Emblem).
I think part of the issue is that there's never any dynamism./1
It's not like "your gun's sight is cracked because you were hit in melee" or "your blade is chipped because it hit heavy plate armor." It's just "you use a weapon for a minute, and then it disintegrates.
One of my biggest issues with Tears of The Kingdom is people told Nintendo they didn’t enjoy it in BOTW and they kept it with the chore of having to upgrade them
And you couldn’t even escape it with the master sword, which still lasted for like four swings before needing to go on recharge, even though it had been on a 10,000 year charge
It is annoying but in BOTW and TOTK it does encourage you to try different weapons, which is good as in games I generally tend to stick to one or two otherwise
Thing is though, all the weapons basically play the same anyway. It's an illusion of variety, and it really takes all the joy out of finding a cool sword, because hey, it's gonna explode in three hits. I'd rather they not force me to play how they want me to.
Oh yeah, the only games I've ever put up with that are the last 2 Zelda games. And to mitigate it in those I just prioritized getting the Master Sword as early as possible 🤣
So yeah, I get you. Is anyone actually asking for breakable weapons?
Don't mind if weapons break by design e.g. the things you pick up in Indy. I do have a problem with RPGs that put a health bar on main weapons. Also not a fan of survival mechanics like hunger or temperature. I deal with that every day, I don't want to deal with it in my games too lol
WoW and Guild Wars 2 got rid of it from players feedback.
It sounds like a practical and managble mechanic till you realise in game time and real world time are completely different,
It broke after 1 ingame day!? vs This is the knife yor grand Daddy gave to me. I've sharpened a couple o' times...
The first Dark Cloud game was bad, especially since your weapons would straight up disappear if they broke. After the first dungeon it was basically mandatory to restart from an earlier save if it happened
Yeah... not a fan of the mechanic, especially with BotW. Same reason I preferred Ridge Racer over Gran Turismo. I'm probably gonna bang into something once or twice, but I don't want it to take me out of the race completely.
The only time I don’t mind it is a Fire Emblem situation where you know how many uses it has and you can easily restock/repair. Then it just feels like MP and not a constant chore
I believe it was patched.
But, I did it by jumping off a ledge, pulling the glider, and during the animation pause, drop stuff. It wouldn't decrease but the items dropped anyway. 1 diamond became 2, became 4, then 8, etc. All you needed was 1 item. Diamonds made weapons almost indestructible.
But I think it was patched. I made sure my Switch didn't lose power and my game and device didn't close or update for weeks. You may be able to do it if you can play a release version cartridge. Haven't tried that. I worry that I'll hate it without the glitches.
Yeah as a general rule I strongly dislike that mechanic. It can of course be done right, like with the knife in Resident Evil but.. example BotW where things were made out of wet paper it was an annoyance above all els
That’s about the same amount of time I gave. I tried Tears of the Kingdom out and lasted a couple of hours, just because it was the new hotness and had hype. Other stuff pulled me away though.
Also, my copy of Tales of Graces f Remastered has finally shipped, hopefully will have it by next week! 😎
at least A, lockpicks in skyrim are weightless, and B, once your lockpicking skill is high enough, you never have to worry about lockpicks breaking again
I don’t mind it too much as long as the game mechanics are built where it doesn’t become a chore to replace them.
Like, in a Ubisoft or EA game I imagine this would be hell. Nintendo less so

everyone seemed to have loved it, but i HATED IT in BotW and TotK.
Or glue together any two weapons into some ridiculous kill stick a la TotK
I played through Drakkhen a while ago. Game just has weapons and armor randomly break. And the best sword in the game costs 1 million jade so it's really not worth the effort to go for it at all
Shops were very limited to replace your gear (unless you had DLC for Fates) and in The Blazing Blade even legendary weapons had durability counters.
it would be SO much better if the weapons simply did not break (the master sword still dies like . _ . )
it does have fuse that can help patch it up but it would be so much nicer if it simply wasnt there
“Wow, I have a 15-foot tall alien warrior in front of me and you’re calling a machine gun that shoots slightly more colorful bullets than my infinite pistol an upgrade. Thanks for the 30 rounds, a-hole” George Carlin voice.
This gave less incentive to fight. You don't gain exp in BotW/TotK and you're just exhausting your weapon's durability/restoratives.
The (manufactured) iron crisis that you end up investigating means that weapons are made with lower quality metals and therefore break much easier.
Unless they're magic weapons, in which case they're impervious to wearing out.
I adore BotW and TotK but the weapon management made for some seriously bad times. Having to pause midfight with Ganon was stupid. But I endured
I might be confusing this with Dragon Quest Builder tho. Hahaha
Pretty sure it was portal knight. I remember making duplicate weapons for DQ Builder. Ugh. Portal knight was cute & fun multiplayer with my kids. Still think of it often for being a minecraft knockoff. Haha
Even the durability in Dark Souls and the early Diablo games were more lenient.
There should be an option in games for disabling it especially if it’s a detriment to enjoyment.
It also promotes exploration and creativity in BOTW
So I am of two minds with weapon degradation. It’s annoying, but makes the game more engaging overall imo
But really didn’t care for TOTK
Only thing I've played for a week and I'm only halfway through the main story.
Help?
You can re sharpen weapons on the fly during combat, and even do so while applying buffs to your weapon. Like fire. Cause fire is always better 🤣
Also, you can break enemy weapons and SEE it snap off 🙌
I recently started my first playthrough of The Witcher 3, and the first thing I did was mod out the inventory weight limit.
Honestly, that's one of the reasons I quit playing. That and the ridiculous amount of workshop storage space is just...ugh.
But I've done 8 playthroughs at this point
Its just a game mechanic to me now 😅
Idk why that’s even a thing
My cosy comfy RPG did not need extra anxiety.
Either it's so negligible to be basically pointless (From Soft games) or so severe as to be ridiculous and discourages use of good weapons (Fallout, Fire Emblem).

The Metro Exodus way, where you can maintain your weapons fairly easily on the fly but have to scramble for the necessary resources, is OK.
The Fallout 3 way, where you have to find copies of the weapon to tape them together (???), sucks, esp. for unique items.
So yeah, I get you. Is anyone actually asking for breakable weapons?
I hated it in Breath of the Wild and was surprised (and disappointed) at how many people defended the practice.
Like c'mon. How can the Master Sword break?! That was a bad design call imo.
you can tell how much I "like" this feature 😆
#gaming

It broke after 1 ingame day!? vs This is the knife yor grand Daddy gave to me. I've sharpened a couple o' times...
But stuff just breaking is annoying.
I finished it just one time
Dark souls but First person

Now I need to get back on one of them…
Thanks…
