His parodies are what everyone remembers, but his original pastiches are true works of art. A perfect example being Slime Creatures From Outer Space. I can't think of anyone that could simultaneously capture the frenetic energy of Hyperactive by Thomas Dolby and make it a work all of it's own.

this is one of the effects of working with the same people consistently for 40+ years. I'm hard-pressed to think of any band that has not only worked together that long but kept it steady and stayed pushing themselves and trying new things, the rapport there is singular

yeah that really comes out in their stylistic homage pieces which are not direct parodies but nevertheless nail a band's sound. "dare to be stupid" being an obvious one but "close but no cigar" is also in those ranks

I have seen all manner of concerts. Big and small, including some of the most popular bands alive.

NOBODY puts as much energy into a concert as Weird Al. At a theater at my nowhere community college, nobody put as much energy into a concert as he did for us.

I saw him live for free in the 90s at the fair. Honestly, he is one of the best performers I've seen live. He puts on a great show with a ton of props and costume changes. It was so good!

I am not a fan of song parodies. Once you hear it - you are good. No need to hear it again. Also, a lot of it is low-fruit, easy stuff and not all that clever.
However, Al is the best at what he does - smart, good musician, funny - and most important - sincere. He puts in the quality work for fans.

As a big fan of the Lonely Island I think a BIG part of quality comedy production is solid production and musical chops in addition to comedy writing. You have to be able to want to listen to a song beyond the humor of it. A few old Weird Al songs have me go dang, this is actually a great song too.

I think that's one of the reasons why everyone lost it for "Planet of the Bass" and other Kyle Gordon songs. There's this sense of "Even if someone doesn't get the joke or the reference, it'll be a fun song to listen to." He obviously cares about that aspect.

I don't think Weird Al works half as well if, for instance, "Eat It" didn't sound almost as good as "Beat It." Yeah, there are outliers - his first album is the work of a not-yet-super-famous accordionist/parodist, stripped down and a little meaner than what came after.
