That sentiment isn't always true. There's a grandmaster that said the perfect game of chess ends in a draw. Actual stockfish level chess games end like 85% in a draw.
Because there's no hierarchy within the pieces - yes in the end it is still a game where you're competing (in this case for territory as opposed to pieces) - it doesn't feel as aggressive to me, & as someone who isn't naturally very competitive I get very involved in the patterns rather than winning
kind of like how monopoly is supposed to show how bad monopolies are and we've missed the point? i feel like chess is supposed to show how war is bad and we've missed the point
"It was the dumb way the pawns went off and slaughtered their fellow pawns while the kings lounged about doing nothing that always got to him; if only the pawns united, maybe talked the rooks round, the whole board could've been a republic in a dozen moves." - Terry Pratchett
I learned to play chess as a kid. I always invented dialogue for my players. The knights always were in love with my queen. The bishops were very staid. The king was a helpless dork that could only move slowly. The queen was all powerful. The game ended whenever my queen was taken.
I read this book once where the MC was like 'you want me to sacrifice a pawn? The queen doesn't care about that pawn or his family, maybe I should sacrifice HER'
Must’ve been written by a man. I always just castled my king as soon as possible bc he was such a useless piece. I still don’t understand why anyone thinks the game should continue once one side loses its queen. Game over right there.
This made me think to myself “i wonder how many stories have been made based on chess games” and then i realized that’s like 80% of homestuck everything always goes back to homestuck
Reminds me of a line where the player played a chess game with moves that were so alien, a woman gave birth, even though she had not been pregnant at the time.
From "MASH" after Hawkeye makes a move playing chess with Winchester:
Charles: Ah, the infamous Yankakovich gambit!
Hawkeye: Oh yeah?
Charles: Yankakovich perfected the strategy of making the most moronic move possible, in order to lull his opponent. We-e-ell, I’m not gonna fall for it.
I don't believe teachers tell children that they are not boys but are really girls. It is true that this country was stolen, not founded, by sinful and evil people.
This describes most games with advanced players. They're both using some established strategy they either came up with or read from a book. If something truly unique happens by accident or on purpose by the other player, it just stops them dead in the tracks because creativity wasn't planned for.
Followed the link for this one bc I couldn’t readily find the title text. Felt like browsing a bit, and clicked random, then previous, then random again. The last 2 were about t-distribution and a line of best fit comic which referenced Lorentz distribution. Can you see where I’m going with this?
All in✌️❤️✊
Narcissistic authoritarian sociopathic pathological liar wannabe king is bankrupting the government by dismantling, weakening it and tanking global economy so he can have COMPLETE CONTROL. Will be sending us to concentration camps like the Jews and Japanese. Let’s nip them in the bud. NOW!
Title text: "It's important to learn the moves that take you into the vortex, but it's best not to study vortex itself too closely. Even grandmasters who have built up a tolerance lose the ability to play for a few hours after studying it."

She was a serious chess player and did get into something like a trance sometimes in a really challenging game...
I'll never get on board with the a - h notation. If I'm playing White, "f pawn" will always be King's Bishop's Pawn.
I'm OLD!!! AGGGH!!!
to me, an unending game where no one wins and no one loses is the perfect game
i feel like that *is* winning
and real chess players hate it
that's amazing!
i had no idea
it's on my list of things i want to learn but haven't had time to yet
and pattern recognition is very soothing to me
so that sounds like a wonderfully relaxing way for me to practice being non-competitive
Chess games only end in victory or defeat because at some point, one fallible human player makes a mistake that the other can capitalise on
I'm old and foolish now.
