I helped teach several friends this in early adulthood. I quickly realized the problem wasn't just "I don't know how to cook" (easy for me to teach basics) but also majorly "I don't know how to cost effectively shop" (a challenge I was very unprepared for)

Plus I've come to realize its such a great connection to her and my childhood. It's the little things (that sometimes aren't so little)!

Recommendation: Watch lots of cooking TV (reruns of Jamie Oliver, et al) and emulate. Trial and error rules. Tennis students improve by watching pros on TV.
