Journalistic, but written by a historian, is Ben Smith's The Dope, which is a narrative history of the Drug War in Mexico. Extremely relevant, readable, brilliant. Also fun is Klein's Doppelganger. I can find faults with it, but it is such an interesting book, rooted in such a weird premise.

This is so inside the parameters it's amazing and I wish I could see it. Doesn't look like the book is available anymore. I hate this about photo book publishing. Some of it is funds, but some of it is catering to collectors who want value to increase. Everyday people never get to see the work.

The Proud Liberal: A Novel by Mark Mathabane. I haven't read it, but it focuses on race and terrorism. His book Kaffir Boy was very good, dealing w/ his growing up during apartheid in South Africa in the 80s. Currently, he lives in the United States in a bi-racial marriage w/ several children.
