lmao Firefox billing itself an "indie browser" when poking you to make it the default is straight up disingenuous
I mean, you don't have to say out loud that it's basically Google's anti-antitrust insurance, but let's not err too far on the other side either...

I use Firefox to work around a Safari bug that affects samply (Safari treats localhost as "mixed content") — so it's non-default and I see a lot of their "love us!" prompts
If we have to dismiss software because of corporate sponsorship, bye bye let's encrypt and Wikipedia
Didn't Windows lose a lawsuit because they made IE their main browser or something, and they were told to force a choice the first time for people who want to use chrome or firefox?
It's the same thing, basically

This makes me think Firefox is Google.
Is it?

I see almost NO ads anywhere.
So the whole manifest shenanigan to impede ad blockers shouldn't happen to them, while most of the other browsers will follow suit?
Which is true of Mozilla. Google funds the not-for-profit arm to develop web standards and gets the search engine slot in return.
Wells Fargo donates to build a new monkey habitat at the zoo. They get their logo displayed, but they don't get say on the day to day care of the monkeys.
It's the same deal here.
But that's a different conversation about how far charitable and lobbying influence should go.
So it shouldn't be a burden, either you trust the app and you select "always" or you don't and you click "just once" every time it asks you
If it doesn't exist already, and it probably does, I could try writing a windows app that does that. Sounds fun.
I use firefox and I don't use google. Actually, I use multiple search engines. It's also open source, and doesn't run on Chromium
I do find it disappointing that Google is the standard search browser, but in their defense, most people use google so it's more welcoming to new users
Google will not provide you services unless you let it surveil you.
no. no it's not. mozillians know that. only their fan base keeps deluding themselves. and their new marketing plays into that. it's ridiculous and transparent.
(it's even preceded by a fun comment)
But still. Ugh.
It is still a non-profit organisation, and an open source platform.
Start page is good anonymises google search without the ads and suggested paid links.

Plus no PWA sucks . I used the community Firefox version, and it was fine except for printing (used to work great, then they started treating the print pop up like a normal window, causing a full background reload when closing it)
So uBlock Lite it is 🤷♂️
Chrome could be considered open source
