I do know that it is a marvelous fictional novel, set during the time when France was going through a tonne of political & social upheaval. The real, non-fictional French Revolution & the related multi-decade civil disorder serve as a backdrop to a beautiful story of love & redemption.

Les Mis was NOT set during the French Revolution. The event at the center of the story was more of a small riot, it is not really remembered in French History EXCEPT by that book.

The French Revolution with the guillotines is 1789, and the violent part pretty much ended in 1794. Les Mis starts in 1815 and the major revolutionary action is a failed riot in 1832, which is why all those characters are dead by the end of it. The title cards are really clear on how dates work.
