what my kids need to understand is that the unwatchable trash from my childhood is precious, while the unwatchable trash they love is the killer of minds

I used to wax eloquent to my kids about how Wacky Races was the apotheosis of Saturday morning cartoons and just what the hell was Ren and Stimpy anyway!
My 5 yo grandson loves looney tunes classics even as I am slightly horrified/nostalgic watching it with him. (No one else will watch them with me, so there’s that.)
Nice thing about being a unyielding pessimist and critic at heart is that I ended up getting used to the idea that I shouldn't put the stuff that defined my tastes on a pedestal.
That said, it *is* hilarious whenever someone significantly younger sees a N64 controller for the first time.
Can hear my mothers voice talking about yelling at my brothers about the ‘Three Stooges’ etc. Then I heard me say the same to my kids about what they watch
An important difference: the precious unwatchable trash from your childhood was powered by cocaine, whereas the killer of minds unwatchable trash of today is powered by algorithms.
It's funny how things change, isn't it? What we considered "unwatchable" as kids is now classic and beloved, while the stuff our kids love seems so... different. I guess it's a reminder that every generation has its own unique tastes and what's "trash" to one person is a treasure to another.
No animated series will ever top the old Hannah Barbara classics. Flintstones, Jetsons, Tom & Jerry, they're all timeless classics, even if they are dated, and in some cases, have aged like sour milk. And anyone who calls them trash clearly don't know shit about how far animated shows have fallen.
TV wasn’t enriching. But it didn’t destroy our ability to focus or the capacity of our neurons to create healthy connections like their ‘Brain Rot’ does.
Works great for any powers that don’t like people who think for themselves.
I actually sat and watched some. it's not good by any measure but it wasn't so bad I turned it off either. it's just one long action scene split into tiktok sized videos with an earworm song and talking toilets.
I doubt anyone's paying that close attention, since youtube cannot tell if it's the screen you're focusing on or if it's just kinda on in the background and once it got popular it started getting more popular because it was popular, rinse and repeat
Problem is after so many voting machines turned up in landfills and thrift shops across the nation there is a possibility that the elections rigged in such a manner to avoid detecting they've been hacked.
OMG what did you try to introduce them to? I tried to get my stepkids to watch The Secret of NIMH years ago and they basically thought I was asking them to pull off their skin with tweezers.
Seems like everything is darker and meaner now. Even remakes of classics are somehow made more violent. I'm spending way more time on Spotify than on TV/apps.
Wasn't allowed to watch
The 3 stooges
All in the family
Soap
Mash.
Now im catching up on All in the family and it is the Maga mentality that got passed to many generations. Im amazed how the grievances are still front and center.
I swear the GOP are pulling from archieved scripts.
Me: God I can't watch another episode of Spidey and His Amazing Friends. [Searches on Amazon]
5YO [Days later]: AND VOLTRON SMASHES THE ROBEAST AND SUMMONS THE BLAZING SWORD!!!
Finding a 40th-anniversary edition of the toy was a godsend.
Here to support The Owl House as best "kids" show available. My daughter has been watching it for years, and it's perfect through and through. The last season is a bit more mature though, fair warning. Can be scary to younger kids.
Owl House is great! So is Steven Universe, I was amazed at the emotional depth of that show. It’s miles from Ren & Stimpy (which I grew up with and still love). Also, Centaur World is a mf trip!
Growing up in the early 90s I think I was rather privileged--there was an entire line of programming of adult-style shows (competitive game shows, news discussions, horror anthology) made for kids. I don't know if they have that today.
Nah there are plenty of good shows for kids out there now. The problem is that it’s a flooded market because of the internet and kids having access to smart devices they don’t actually need means easy delivery of mediocre content. Also, be real here- some of our shows growing up were trash too
Yah every fucking generation says that. It’s always the same. I like a lot of shit that’s on today because it brings forth the bs of how we were raised that certain things really weren’t an issue, when they were.
Because the stuff you (we) watched was written by heavy drug users. Creative people who were allowed to be creative. Put cocaine back in the writers room and the shows will get better.
Though I get the humor, the “trash” kids grew up on, at some point, stopped being age-appropriate for their brain development and was just stuff made up by corporate suits. Too many people have no clue (incl parents) that entertainment (incl apps) affects development of empathy, self-regulation, etc
Western kids, for sure. With the internet it's so wide open. We have no idea the stress that our parents were under. My folks never watched the 6 o'clock news. I'm assuming it was just the newspaper or the 10 o'clock.

Social and political views. The good old days and the issues have not changed.
The father was talking about Mozart.
Things never change.

Me: Really low stakes.

- 90s kid who watched a lot of Nick at Nite.
And no, I did not have to look up a single word of this on google 😆
