we’ve had many waves of people checking in on the site and bouncing. it always feels a little sad to see folks i know bounce but i know how sticky the twitter network effects are.
“build it and they will come” is not enough, but still — we aim to make the app better for every next wave, bit by bit

With one single exception. I go there twice a week for 5 minutes combined for ONE account I'm waiting and hoping migrates here, even as a bot
(T)EME is around the corner, sadly
Wonder if @dansavage.bsky.social is here - oh shit (no pun intended) he is!!
I’ve noticed another thing, selfies don’t look as good on this site.
keep fighting the good fight, dan!
But I'm old and wise and let it pass😉🤣🥳❤️
Group DMs is a big one and I know that's coming.
Balancing growth/dev with income/cost I know is tough, but we're supportive!
im curious from a strategy perspective
as somebody that's been here since almost the beginning it's fun to watch the traction build and feel the improvements
- The app perf is so much better, significantly better than Twitter
- I actually get replies and engagement here, unlike Twitter
Talking to major creators in those spaces to understand their needs might be helpful
It's long past time to ditch Elon's garbage heap for good, so I thought it was finally happening
That’s probably a selling point for some people though.
I think if a few big content creators or celebrities will make a home here then it will change things. Surely at some point it has to be bad for one’s image to be on X
leading to less opportunities to reply / QT and engage
leading to less interactions overall
There’s a reason why people are choosing this over Mastodon. For me, it reminds me of old Twitter.
I think people are coming in waves and the people that are staying are staying for reasons that appeal to them, those who stay have found their new home
people who bounce are looking for something else. It doesn't need to be winner-take-all.
We're cross-posting in case of dropoff but we're here.
I won't until most accounts I enjoy following are posting here.
On Twitter, if you didn't have thousands of followers, you just got algorithm'd into irrelevance, speaking into the void.
A lot more activity from the web dev scene but also a lot nicer app experience. This combined with the worsening experience on Twitter will hopefully help this platform to grow further
On one hand it could make people jump ship if they see the numbers are going down again — but on the other hand us nerds also like to drive up statistics, so it might also help in creating momentum?
@jaz.bsky.social and @mackuba.eu come to mind as two people who regularly publish and discuss graphs about Bsky usage.
In the public, of course. All data here is public.
Getting follower counts up for those to whom it matters would seem to be key to getting folks to stick around.
If you build a decent PEOPLE trap, though, they'll never escape once they come inside.
it’s a bet that we’ll also do other things that actively attract people. that gives us a chance. quality acts as the multiplier
Biggest shift for me after poking my head in for a bit, is... I am now seeing stuff I wanna see from people posting here!
Aside from a few UI quirks it’s been pretty smooth.
Images are terribly slow to load after selecting them which makes me think it’s broken every time.
oops wrong account
I’ve had people open bsky up in front of me and were unable to point out differences between bsky and twitter.
If you build it, eventually we will build it too ❤️
I’m a recent transfer from twitter from the most recent wave.
The app has seen massive improvements and the more I use it, the more I like it
Honestly, there’s only a few things that Twitter has on BlueSky and that’s
- most people I interact with are on Twitter
The (new?) starter packs are also a blessing. Such a simple but very useful feature
And of course the core idea that you can build custom feeds etc
finally I just used the Sky Follower Bridge chrome extension (+ another convenience script someone put in their GH issues) and it worked marvelously well. 3.5k following to 1k following.
Frankly it looks like it is already for the Vue people though I only need @roe.dev here
I didn’t stick when I first used Twitter or Instragram, sometimes you try twice.

What would be useful tho is a curated list of feeds folks could subscribe to when joining bsky
Anyways, you folks are rocking the app development
I miss some of the folks in tech I used to follow, but for the most part I'm pretty happy with the community I found here
I've been around the web since the early 2000s and this is the closest I got from building a real community, no trolls
♥️♥️♥️
He built a TON of cool stuff for bsky, and was the most engaged user in the BRdev community around here even before the first major wave of Brazilians
I see much potential for community, though it could use more user friendliness, or embedded how-to's, considering the lack of effort individuals from these waves are used to operating under.
Once here a revelation but too many either don't know about it or
misperceive it...e.g. had a couple of peeps say they thought it was the 'cartoon makers' site.
Perhaps proactive promotion is needed to sustain growth/retain?
Do you guys know why we're here & sticking?
Do you know what it would take for us to move on?
Bluesky into their vocab, to give choice & ease of move to familiar but better.
Need to ease bringing their buddies with them.
Need to get Bluesky into everyday speak, a standard choice in social media links on websites, media etc.
Promo needed ... video, audio for mass sharing?
Every successful business needs to win hearts & minds & keep them. People are lazy, want the comfort of what works for them not the faff of change.
The best of twitter was good, many stick because of it & don't know where else!
*Of course, the last 20% always takes forever and is a moving target anyway
You probably should be angling for some really big accounts!
1. "is there interesting content on here that I like" (aka, not just politics and pop culture and people talking about Twitter)
2. If I post stuff that I find interesting, do I get engagement from others?
X is awful feature wise, bsky already has it beat. (Aside from scheduled posts and drafts.)
What X does have, is nonstop content due to the population.
We need more people posting content to give everyone else a reason to log in.
Basically I see a post, feel it's not what I'm here for, find the keyword and mute it.
Works pretty well for me.
Would you generally say, it’s easy enough already to get started for developers?
I gave Mastodon several tries! What kept me bouncing off it was feeling like I was posting into a void. Not a problem, here!
