For what it's worth, American aid directly saved my ancestors/grandparents from different sides of the family not once but twice in Soviet history - both during the Civil War, and during WWII. They would have all starved or died of disease otherwise (and indeed at least two of them did just that).

If it makes people feel better - this isn't even a lie, it's a guess. We'll never know for sure what would've happened without lend-lease, and "the USSR disintegrates leaving the UK to be slowly worn down on their own" is not an impossible outcome.
