i keep seeing people say that this app is becoming toxic like twitter but it may just be who you’re interacting with i fear. if you follow a bunch of people who are doing what you disliked on twitter then of course it’ll be the same lol

the difference between bsky and Xitter is that you have so much control of your experience. vet people before following back and simply mute/block people that piss you off it’s all so simple.
Absolutely! I've followed some folks and then reversed that decision real quick when I found they were screwing up the vibe. No regrets. We really don't have to suffer over here, and that's amazing!
It's the inertia of having to move to a new place + bsky requires you to do more work yourself insted of an algorithm trying to determine what you'd like to see. The site has also gained a /lot/ of users recently and the site management hasn't put the situation under control yet.
It’s more work but I like being in control instead of the highest bidders in an ad campaign or an algorithm focused on monetizing my activity on a platform.
I love the simplicity and rawness of this site. It’s so much like old twitter back in the day. I would like more features, but I’m so happy to be here that I don’t really care.
Absolutely. And bother to create lists of people with different topics and you can separate your hobby social experience and a political one for example entirely. Nothing is forced down your throat like in Elonworld, you have total control.
I vet before and after. I've noticed that the older I get, the less patience I have for some of the behavioral commonalities people tend to exude on sm.
They're weak trolls too... Most of them tap out if they don't get an instant freak out and you just calmly shut them down or counter cite them. I've had two far right trolls actually tap out complaining I was bullying them in the last week (but hey, post Nazi propaganda, get dunked on)
This but also since the app stopped being invite only, a lot of Twitter users have migrated over here and carried on with a lot of the toxicity from there. I kinda feel like that'll die down once they realize we really ain't with the bs and block quite frequently and, often times, preemptively.
It is inevitable that undesirable accounts are started here but so far the difference is we are not swamped with hate and bile like on Twitter resulting in feelings of no control and an unhealthy experience.
We will just need to continue to block and hope the tipping point never arrives.
they had 20 people on their team and they only recently expanded their moderation team give them a minute lol i’ve seen some accounts disappear i’m sure it’ll get better with time
Legit! Im just blocking anyone who is doing stuff I don’t agree with. Be toxic be blocked I ain’t doing that, I’m not letting the algo win for their wants this time lol
That's what a lot of people don't seem to understand.
People gotta learn how to control the algorithm.
If you want a nice place with cat and dog videos, it's pretty easy to streamline your feed.
If you wanna get into political arguments, that's also pretty easy to find.
Its all about how long you stay on a post, like, comments follows. Even if you just peeked for an extra millisecond now the algo realizes its found something.
I’ve chosen not to engage with that toxic behaviour. I’d walk past those people if they were screaming in the street, and so I’ll scroll past them here.
Block the trolls, click to see less of it if its toxic stuff that your are ostensibly supposed to agree with. There are grifters and disinformers of all stripes, don’t be nice, curate your stuff and see how stuff that’s different than you sought on twitter.
Unfortunately, most people ported their "twitter followers" over to bluesky, and that means all the bots & idiots came over too.
People don't seem to realize how good they are at appearing to be legit accts, willing to create their bio to be accepted by their targets. They run many sockpup accts.
You're absolutely right. I was ripping my hair out wondering if it was me, and on the edge of giving up the whole thing up. I shut down all my followings, and the difference it made was huge. In addition, it made me smile that all those w⚓s that had been giving me grief are now talking to the void.
right it reminds me when people move to a new city and they’re still not happy but all they did was change locations and not anything else about their circumstances 😭
I often tell them what they are full of, or refer them to x because they’d feel more comfortable there. Then I mute and block. I love that block button, and my comment is meant to get under their skin 😊
Re toxic interactions here, I suspect the people having them aren't aware of how different the experience can be if they look at some of the controls we're given to use. There's got to be some force of habit in there too.
I know for certain the X chuds aren't privy to the mechanics here yet.
It's going to be really strange to see how that cohort interacts with this network when the tools we have for defence keep breaking the dynamic they've built for nearly a decade.
Also I wish that people understood on the internet that you can just… not fuel the fire??? By choosing like to not talk to people who hurt your feelings???
Exactly. There are a number of accounts I don’t follow here. I also stay away from accounts using clickbait, asking for reposts or likes and telling me they will amplify my voice. I like and repost what I want. I’m more interested in what others say than how many followers I have.
My theory is speak your mind let people decide if they agree or not either way its your mind. IDC how many followers/hearts whatever. Just think that the real definition of IQ and EI is being able to look at things from several dif viewpoints and making decisions. So speaking your mind ^ IQ and EI
I promptly block the twitteresque people when I find them. Once they start with the denigration and name calling I end the conversation and block. I came to Bluesky to get away from thst bullshit.
It's not really that.. I've seen the social circles that use different platforms and unfortunately Bluesky is getting more like twitter as those users bail.
The really cool place will continue to be ignored by profit run companies. They know they can't control it or sell it so it's ignored.
Like…just don’t hate-follow people! Life’s too short to put up with seeing some jerk with bad opinions keep intermittently popping up in your feed and making yourself miserable!
Albeit Twitter was toxic but it did provide feedback on firstly, receiving reports and secondly, what they decided though seen someone say they never received feedback
We need to know how well this platform is managing toxic posts/accounts
I've seen some trans ladies with larger accounts talking about having to deal with trolls and harassment. They're drawing heat that those of us with fewer followers don't have to deal with.
Can't block people if they make a new account everyday to harass you.
You can limit replies to people you're following. The downside is that cuts down engagement considerably.
The thread I saw was limited, which meant that I couldn't interact because she doesn't follow me. BlueSky is much less interesting if you can only interact with people you already know.
Nawww I’ve noticed it too! More mean people than usual, but I’ll just block because whatever word vomit I skeeted into the void shouldn’t have warranted disrespect. Idk I’m just glad block feature works lol. Don’t want that negativity near me.
that’s the thing though. i’ve had trolls/people try to argue with me and i just block and within 5 mins i forget they exist. no app is going to be completely free of negativity but to say it’s like twitter when you literally cannot get away from harassment over there just isn’t accurate lol
The issue for me is that I genuinely want to engage with people who disagree with me.
On Twitter, they'll just call you a pedo.
On here, people are a bit too quick with the block and report.
We should welcome people who genuinely want to engage in discussion.
You can do that, that is the power of curating your social media the way you want it to work for you. Other people blocking does nothing to your feed. If they are reported and found to not follow the rules of the site then are they really people who will engage with others?
I won't find them if they've already been blocked by the original poster.
It's not a complaint. I'm happy that the trolls are getting run out quickly.
It's just an observation.
The vetting and block feature allows you to shut out the noise of idiots. It allows you to shut out all of their yelling so you can quietly have civil conversations.
Bro I have blocked every political account I see, muted all the words I can think of, and still see nothing but angry political bs and internet fighting.
The problem is not the platforms, it’s how people have been conditioned by all the platforms.
I had an interaction with a guy yesterday, who got nasty and called me MAGA and an anti-environmentalist because I wanted a battery EV instead of a Fuel Cell EV.
I use block lists! You can instantly block thousands of people who have been flagged - here's a massive Maga block list, and I've also used ones for AI, stolen art, transphobes/homophobes, troll accounts, bots, etc.
Be cautious which lists you use though. We have confirmation that hate groups are now on here creating dummy lists and then adding popular progressive and sane ppl accounts once sufficiently large enough
Oh absolutely. I have a couple of trusted people on here who is lists I will use as they put them up, but everyone else I scroll through and check to make sure
No, it's not that.
I've been seeing vile replies to other people from people I don't follow.
As people come over there are bound to be bad actors with them.
Ok. Let me explain. On Twitter the right trolls whose only purpose is to make the left angry are getting lonely because we all moved to Bluesky. They need us to troll. So now they follow us here to continue to troll.
Easy solution: Stick to "Following" or "Mutuals" and block anyone you don't want to see. Until the owners of this site sell out to another billionaire that doesn't have the websites best interests at heart, this will still be better place than Twitter...
it took me like two-ish weeks to get it to a place where i wanted to be on it everyday. and then ever since it’s been exactly what i want. patience and being intentional when building your following list/feeds helps a lot. also interacting a lot helps!
Wise words. I have intentionally not followed certain groups of people that I had on twitter so as to avoid the pitfalls in doing so. Twitter unfortunately, became too toxic through my mistaken choices. I am looking forward to a whole new way that is fun, here on blue sky.
Also, I would be careful of people who you seemingly agree with but who also want to engage in conflict with others. That will draw a lot of negativity to you feed. Sometimes you have to block your "own side" too.
Sometimes "your own side" is just pretending to be a characterized version of it, and is actually a bad faith troll, desperately trying to paint you in a bad light by your acceptance of them.
When it is over the top with non-sense just block.
2/2
I’d also add that there *should* be some robust discussion, not to be confused with toxic trolling. We don’t want this to be just another echo chamber
Yes I take a very close look at anyone following me before I do them. Red flags to watch for:
1. Nothing but reposts in their profiles.
2. Little to no description in the profile.
3. People who are obviously trolling their only fans or crypto services
1/2
Yes the key is to mute all the stuff and people that you don’t want to interact with. The moderation feature makes it pretty easy just mute the hot topic key words and enjoy a more peaceful experience
There is definitely a lot of Trolls who probably came over from X, its annoying, not to mention some strange folks with stranger agendas, but the beauty is that block button.
Yes! Vet, mute, block, don't interact with trolls. Set the DM option to No DMs. Follow interesting people. Key tip: Mute WORDs. I have muted Trump, Maga, Hunter, Elon and I am about to mute bitcoin and crypto
BSky makes it so easy to curate the feed and block what you don't want. Anyone complaining is too desperate for follower counts to block/report or just uninterested in solving an issue they are complaining about.
I’m blocking all that are just using me to exploit themselves. I’m not allowing people selling stuff, asking for money, crypto sales, and incels who want a woman for their entertainment. I’m not here for that nonsense. I also have my DM turned off.
i don't think blue sky is that different then how twitter started, it's just how places like this work, it starts off okay, but as it gets bigger and bigger, the bad apples show them selves
Yeah and the big difference here is some real moderation, hate accounts gets banned rather than amplified here, Andrew Tate got kicked off in 1 day and that other hate spreader Libs of TikTok too.
I think maybe the newest people haven't got any of the blocklists etc, that were everywhere just a week or so ago.
And maybe don't know they can do so many things to stop shitty people showing on their feed.
The admins should probably tell them occasionally.
I'm being absolutely ruthless with who I follow and who I block. It helps massively when there's no algorithm or intentional pushing of blue ticks into my feed.
Every time I see someone posting on here who tips their hand at being MAGA or just simply a brutish lout, I block them immediately, much like pulling a weed in the lawn.
So true that we create our own reality in those ways
The cynic in me, however, reminds the rest of me constantly that Homo sapiens as a species can’t own nice things ever
I started off following "book" Bsky. I actually don't read nearly as much as I should, but the folks that do read a lot of books? Well they're usually pretty chill. They also usually care about facts and are willing to entertain (reasonable) alternative points of view.
I’ve always been against follower harvesting. If something is not worth sharing, I won’t put it on my page. Also where I draw the line is someone coming on my post to argue about what I posted. One thing I don’t do is argue with someone over their post, I just unfollow or block if it comes to it
It has been good so far. The surge of people celebrating the death of the UnitedHealthcare guy was pretty effed up, but that's what blocklists are for.
I agree. I also was glad to see people having some semblance of a decent conversation about the man's work and the consequences of the insurance industry's drive for profit. Intelligent exchanges with people who may not see the world the way you do keeps my feed from looking like a friendly silo.
Also if you comment on people's posts, the algorithm will feed you more of that content. I find clicking the "discover" tab and blocking a bunch of people who post things I dislike helps immensely.
This app makes it so you have much more control over what you see. All the feeds, lists and moderation tools. If you don’t like a feed, try a different one. If someone is seeing the same stuff they’re seeing on x then they’re doing something wrong lol.
And you can hide replies which is huge. If some fuckshit comes to your post and trolls you or posts a bunch of bigoted shit, you can simply hide the post so it’s gone. On Twitter people usually argue with those comments since they can’t be hidden which then put them at the top of the comment list.
Don't forget to report the reactionaries. Always report their asses before you block them. I think bsky actually IP and cookies bans people like Reddit. It makes it extra annoying for them if they really want to come on here just to troll.
I don't know how I'm going to do ish here ,I want it to feel safe but I'm afraid that as long as I have interest in world affairs people will attack me with their own wrong opinion and yes any option condoning severe violence is wrong
I haven’t seen many toxic people… then again I follow national parks, libraries, and artists. I’m not looking for drama.
Everyone who reads my comment, I hope you’ve had enough to drink today. Hydration is important ^^
This is the way. I put my face on mine so I can hold myself accountable as well. Can’t be getting dragged back down to that level of interaction again. I want the old internet back, even if it means giving up a bit of anonymity.
Because you are just scrolling past. I understand that these buttons did nothing on xitter, but what you (and all of us) need to do is not just "scroll past".
Block, mute, move on. Report if it's TOS-breaking nonsense. If you don't block them, how will Bluesky know you don't want to see it?
that's up to you, I can't police you. but if you want to see less annoying things, blocking the people who are annoying is the best way to go about it.
good luck and I hope you manage to find something that works for u
What really curates all of our experiences on here is us telling the algorithm that exists on this site "I want to see x and I do not want to see y" by using the follow, like, repost, block, mute and report functions.
We are all responsible for curating our own experiences.
It might go there. I have discovered all the right trolls can’t live without us to troll so they come over here. If you browse discover and read the replies then you see them. I doubt you can block thousands. But if you make a nice follow list and only see them then you should stay sane.
Plus — my feeds there were chock full of ads. Every 3rd post was Trump tees, Bitcoin, and even MAGA political ads. Stuff I was “forced” to see. I do miss trending tho
Knock wood — I can count on one hand the times I’ve seen nasty, hateful posts here. I also don’t miss the relentless MAGA trolls, MTG & Bobo & Loomer nonsense. Not dealing with MAGA drama has significantly improved my well being!
I know folks on this app who waste no time in blocking MAGA's or other trolls as soon as they are contact with them. I try to take the time to check who's following me - or who comments on my posts. If I discover they are "Trumpers" - they are blocked. I no longer engage with them like on "X."
Hopefully the moderation team can effectively control all of the unnecessary hate speech and intentional misinformation that has made other parts of the internet so unbearable
This app is very cozy! I'm a bit hesitant to fill out my bio cuz I still get to text nice ppl on here without it AND I see super cute animals pictures everywhere!! I'm in heaven
Agreed. I'm following a lot of people, as i want a busy timeline, but i will not stand for abuse, toxic behavior, or people trying to scam me in my DMs. Block works! And blocking the stinkers leaves my timeline full of friendliness and positivity.
Agree completely. Came across a horrible troll yesterday, blocked and reported - let's hope that's one less on here.
We have a responsibility to police our own spaces.
It's inevitable that BlueSky will - like every social media plastform - attract trolls, haters and grifters.
The difference here is that you don't HAVE to put up with them.
They can't pay to promote posts. And once you block them, they're gone from your life.
WE are responsible for our own feeds.
Not fair. We old ladies have our follows filled with romance scammers and bots even though our bios describe our long term marriages etc. It’s an effort to turn BlueSky into another hellhole and I’m blocking as fast as I can. At least 10 a day and I’m just a minnow account (as opposed to big fish).
Block lists are in your settings under moderation.
There are other controls for scammers, crypto, nudity, etc. Check out followers b4 you follow back. Just Block anyone you don't want.
MAGAs are now creating block lists that infuse legit accounts in the lists. Unless you are willing to vet every single acct on a block list, you are helping to block allies.
Yes! Even I have one, though it’s very modest and you’re better off with a small number of lists from people you trust than a large number of lists from people you don’t.
I think you can get to a person’s lists from their profile.

Just. Block.
Silly, I know.
But it works.
It's bliss.
Fuck off and blocked them.
Also, the moderation team is overwhelmed here by the flood of new accounts. And, the trolls are running amok a bit.

To each, her own.
And mute a whole
List at once?
