This is the kind of naive glorification of pre globalisation 'small towns' that I find so unrealistic. Technology evolved, and it wasn't as if there wasn't crime without immigrants.

Towns that have professional football and give their names to larger Metropolitan Boroughs are not "small".
It bewilders & infuriates me that wrapping oneself in the flag & decrying the loss of Empire ("no, no, not the _bad_ bits") still has traction, despite any & all evidence that's is BS.
