I think that in this case, anti-American is being used instead of anti-democracy. Even though things have changed, when we look at what the founders intended, we know that the actions of the Republican Party do not align with those notions.

I think we're gonna see a concerted effort by conservative opponents of Musk to paint him as un-American because he wasn't born in the US.

And we're going to have to be careful not to attack a real sack of shit in a very particular way because the point is to normalize othering fellow citizens.

I don’t think nearly enough noise has been made about the fact that he and at least two other prominent backers of Trump spent their formative years in apartheid-era South Africa. Nor has there been enough noise made about how many American conservatives lobbied on its behalf.

The same William F. Buckley who wrote The South Must Prevail in 1957 was an enthusiastic supporter of South Africa’s apartheid regime in 1961. He never actually recanted either position.

I don’t see Elon’s views, (or Peter Thiel’s views, or David Sacks’ views) on great replacement theory as separable from spending at least some of their formative years benefitting from sitting at the top of the racial hierarchy that apartheid created in South Africa.

Also worth noting that the owner of the LA Times, Dr. Pat Soon-Shiong, also spent his formative years in apartheid-era South Africa. Despite experiencing some negative impacts from it because he isn’t white, here in the U.S. he directs the paper in ways that serve conservative interests.
