attempting to describe the vibes of the moment. have yet to do better than: "imagine watching a documentary reenacting the burning of the Library of Alexandria set to the soundtrack of 'Yakety Sax'"

I shared this with a fellow librarian & got a message asking me not to „trigger“ her so early in the morning.
I thought the post was humorous if sad.
Known this person for 50+ years. Considered at one time my bestie…
Live and learn…and then reevaluate our friendships to align with our values.😞
We're all hurting, disoriented, and trying to find boundaries that can protect our sanity. I'll hope for your friendship's sake that that's what your fellow librarian's response reflects. Though I know that's little consolation.
To be fair I think the burning of Alexandria set science, medicine, and math and so much more back hundreds of not over a thousand years considering the age of the Egyptian empire.
And we are watching that in real time now- she’s IN the fire while trying to do kids story time
I think you might have the same values but just different ways of coping with the trampling of them, ykwim? Some of us enjoy gallows humor and some can't go there at times.
Yeah, I‘ tried going with that but it’s been a bunch of stuff over a very short period that convinces me that I have to wake up to this new reality:
I‘m worried about the world, she is worried about creature comforts.
I'm fascinated by the antebellum period in the American South -- the idea that for ten years people knew that "something" was coming, about to happen. Did it feel like this? And how did they just sort of live in that?
What an amazing image you have evoked. Both hilarious & terrifyingly at the same time.
Not sure I should pass this on it is like "Baby Shark" song.
Oh crap! It's in my head!!!
Hehehe, that's ok! I only made the connection a few minutes before I wrote that skeet. We will figure everything out eventually, even if it requires a team effort. 🙂
The same one. That was a dealbreaker for me with Post's music, because Wallen doesn't seem to think he did much wrong (at least, I'm not aware of him doing any work to understand what he did). Gotta draw lines somewhere. That's one of mine.
Reminds me of that time I dropped my phone in the ocean—watching it sink, knowing all my photos were gone, but the ringtone was still playing underwater. That’s the vibe.
also they burned the library solely for the purpose of making this documentary, which sucks, but you’re watching it so they’re getting the ad money which makes it technically a success, for them
Platos cave allegory, but everyone walked back into the cave on accident, but by accident, we mean they muted the loudest voices of people telling them not to go back in the cave.
Boris Johnson resigned after scores of government resignations, and Hugh Grant tweeted activist Steve Bray to suggest he blast out what us Brits know as the Benny Hill Theme Tune...
Featuring an excellent video explaining the Trump Baby Blimp that is now in the Museum of London but was used multiple times in legally organised protests...
Matt Bonner designed it - not sure if he's selling them wholesale
In the background, you hear the chuckles of a demented clown. The longer you watch the documentary, the louder it gets. It starts ringing in your ears. You black out.
...cosplaying as a blue-collar worker while being chauffeured around a tarmac in a dump truck that's never going to catch flight? The metaphors write themselves.
To me it feels like the end of Stranger Things S4 where the Upside Down has infiltrated our world and is taking over but everyone thinks it's an earthquake.
I know this is not the most pertinent part of your post, but I paused to read it twice because I have the Yakety Sax album. . .it was my late father’s.
My research area and book are on the Great Library of Alexandria. And yeah what a cognitive dissonance that is. Also with politics as creepy as the dueling banjos from Deliverance.

And Silicon Valley pours on accelerant.
It's like they don't even have respect for their own evil deeds.

where are its offices located?
what is its charter?
who are its officers?
where can i find its bylaws, policies, and procedures?
by what authority does it act?
to whom is it accountable?
to what oversight is it subject?
just asking questions"

Perfect.
Fuck him…(and I was starting to like Post)
ESPECIALLY after brushing him off as a clown when I first took a look at him.
Oh well…sad trombone.
The bad news is, we have no library...and I'll be hearing that song in my head every time a new news story from the federal government pops up.
But yeah - this is a perfect description. 🎷
And You have my sympathy. 👌
You win today.

I think the US could benefit from more funny and fun activism. It could help cut-through...
