Increasingly, you have to read the NYT like you would read media under an authoritarian regime. In a regime where explicit opposition is forbidden, you have to look for it to be expressed indirectly and by implication--and that's exactly what they're doing here.

The problem, of course, is that the NYT is acting like they're under censorship while they are still in actual fact free. I'm wondering if in this case it's an act of resistance by NYT writers against their editors and publisher. "Tell Sulzberger we're just doing a puff piece."
