To illustrate the words "lend" and "borrow", the officially licensed 1993 "Super Mario Super English" German-English dictionary depicts Mario as someone who constantly asks Peach to lend him money.

I mean they spend half the series with a literal big pile of money in their reception room so they seem to have done alright until they blew it all at once and then got their house sold out under them by Jake's son.
Makes me wonder. . .how much does Mario even make in a year? Bro's resume is a whole a$s novel so I imagine he'd have to fork up a lot of cash to afford all his education, but at the same time he owns his own island and numerous courses. . .
I like to think Peach is less annoyed about lending Mario money, and more annoyed he's coming to her personally for this. She's a princess, she has people that take care of this for her, and has probably ordered both the treasury and the banks to lend him money when he needs it.
None of my experiences with the Mario games prepared me for the possibility that the Mushroom Kingdom was a paper money economy. The enormous coins must serve some other purpose.
Someone hasn't seen my three-hour video essay on the impact of Luigi's Mansion on our knowledge of Mushroom Kingdom finance! Let me summarise it for y-*gets muted by everyone*
I was considering Luigi's Mansion, but I'm not certain any of those games are set in the Mushroom Kingdom. It always feels like Luigi is going elsewhere in those.
The look on Peach’s face tells me that she’s paying mario for sex and Toadsworth just walked in so she’s trying to cover it up while making eye contact with him while Mario looks confused.
Well, we see for a few seconds that ATMs (or at least the equivalent of them) in the Mushroom Kingdom are just stations where you jump on a ? block a bunch until you get the coins you need, so maybe the actual banks are something a bit similar
"Well, your-a highness, you don't-a charge Mario interest and-a frankly, you're-a pretty freakin'-a loaded with you three castles and-a you entire kingdom so you can-a maybe stand to-a lend a dollar to the guy who save-a you from the Bowser...... WOO HOOOOOOOO!"
I feel like if she's a Princess and Mario keeps rescuing her, then he is her Knight and should totally have a salary of some kind beyond whatever he scrounges up on his travels.
She's literal royalty, and he's a small business owner in Brooklyn who has to take a ton of personal time saving her ass. Who pays his rent when he's fighting turtles in castles for her?
Peach, you are the ruler of the Kingdom. You live in a castle. Pay the literal definition of a working class hero who saves you and said kingdom basically on a daily basis.
Wait, Peach has dollar bills? Are those gold coins not legal currency in the Mushroom kingdom? No wonder Mario's broke, he's been collecting worthless tokens for all these years.
I dunno princess, maybe the next time you get kidnapped by a giant horny turtle monster that breathes fire maybe you can just sorta lend your OWN ass out of the situation

In either case, Peebs is a friend and in some ways that is it's own reward.
(Never accept that line from your boss of course.)
“Can’t, I’m at bowser right now”
“Bet”
"But my credit score, it's-a terrible!"
The royal coffers can take a hit of little enough money that you cqn hold it in your hand.
Plus? Mario's so busy being a hero this is prolly first he's hearing of your kingdom even having banking!
Or they contain asbestos and he's getting paid to remove it
i think i found exactly what you need to learn german.
Or maybe the paper currency can't hover in the air like the coins.
Please start the new year with the help of my daughter 🥺
