While we’re speaking cursed names, Noah Smith also argues very often and forcefully for immigration. Sees no clear reason to limit and and regularly highlights the excellent and nearly immediate economic impact they have contrary to common wisdom.

Yes although there are a lot of deeply racist people out there, mainly from a libertarian background, who favor open borders. The GMU economist Bryan Caplan is one of the most prominent of these. My best theory is that immigrants make a great rhetorical cudgel against racial justice politics.

This might be too much to get into in a post, but we didn’t have a southern border problem when it was an open border. Farm workers would come for a season, and go back with money in their pockets. Win-win. People only started staying here undocumented when crossing back and forth became hard to do.

I think about this a lot when people say their ancestors came "legally." Like, what do they think that means? Many of my ancestors literally just crossed the Canadian border. Other came through Ellis Island, but the only requirement was to not be sick and have enough money to get to your destination

It’d be nice if Dems could at least promote open borders as an ideal to aspire to even if they feel the need to hedge on logistical grounds. We need to more forcefully counter the vitriol from the right. Feels like we are always affirming their made up problems and only asking to be slightly nicer.

I fully believe that everyone that wants one should be able to get a taxpayer ID to live and work in the US. People should be able to both come and go as their lives and desires dictate.
