similarly the memories of good factory jobs are memories of a time when even someone without serious education get a job that paid enough to support a family, own a home, gave you a pension, etc. it’s not a veneration of the work, it’s of the fruits of organized labor’s political efforts

I've had rewarding physical jobs in my youth, they certainly weren't factory jobs, what made them really rewarding was being in control of my work, being able to take breaks when I wanted, setting the pace, having authority to solve issues autonomously
