Sen. @schatz.bsky.social argues that Democrats need to stop saying things that are “egregiously weird sounding” to echo activists and academics and instead speak like normal people.
“But it’s also just alienating. This magic words thing has to go away.”

That might matter.
@schatz.bsky.social
Until then, it’s just blah, blah, blah.
Right wing media is very successful at pounding phrases over and over again. "CRT" and "DEI" - both are "egregiously weird sounding" and therefore should be defeated
Green New Deal is a great phrase to repeat. "Center the needs..." is not.
Code switching is one term....
I would like to know why they're so good at it though.
“Be kind to our language. Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone else does. Think up your own way of speaking, even if only to convey that thing you think everyone is saying. Make an effort to separate yourself from the Internet. Read books.”
Brilliant stuff from the Dems. On a roll.
The party is directly at odds with society
His idea of weird is weird.
Likewise, "big bold climate plan" could mean anything and often means nothing. "Green New Deal" refers to specific set of policies with social justice goals built in.
People don't trust him because he's not trustworthy.
Americans are not turned off by the things they hear Democrats say all the time THEY ARE NOT HEARING DEMS AT ALL!!
Dems won people who engaged more with news/media and (relatively) in the swing states.
“The male exited the vehicle”.
Everyone talks weird.
whatever that means 🙄
"We sound too elitist" but saying it in the most elitist way ain't the way, even if the original point is solid.
Most people give people room to bungle their words irl, but the word-cops literally patrol rooms seeking outrage. It creates reaction. This one if you are lucky—🙄.
I don’t really know if Dem politicians do it though. 🤷♀️
It’s the worst form of gaslighting.
Brian likes to pretend everything is a messaging problem when it’s really a “I take destructive positions” problem.
I AM the one who takes it too far.
But I insist others never should have pushed those buttons in the first place.
Also, it’s funny 🤣
Maybe don’t try and force people from South and Central America to call themselves LatinX. They have no problem with the gender tags in their own language. It’s insulting.
Also forcing older democrats to learn a new vocabulary every decade is getting annoying.
Step 2: enact M4ALL
Step 3: win
"Let's focus in on these major action items, then circle back after impactful learnings", type of thing
Every other mod Dem dipshit says they lost bc of random “not dumb enough” phrasings and every actual swing voter talks like they haven’t heard either candidate speak for even literally 20 seconds
... says person criticizing Democrats for using the wrong words.
I'm the definition of a Progressive Coastal Elite and I find the faculty lounge language off-putting.
It's not what we say that was the problem. It's what we were afraid to keep saying.
B. I'd rather the country NOT resign itself to becoming Idiocracy. I WANT to vote for leaders who sound smart & who ARE smart. I find it comforting to have smart people in charge.
The failure to reach a plurality was due to missing a vast number of voters who aren’t ultra-progressive. A vast number of historic Dem voters.

Since politics is now dominated by money, Dems plead for donations to those who exploit labor the most. Until that core issue’s confronted the party will have an authenticity problem language tweaks won’t fix.

It seems you don't understand this tired argument. This is why we can't move forward. This comes up EVERY election cycle about how Dems need to moderate their language. What about the right?
You're accepting the frame that the dumbest Evergreen freshman speaks for all Democrats.
Jargon doesn’t help anyone, except those who are part of the group.
If you want to talk to people who are not in the group, better to use the more common vernacular.
Does it seem easy to you to get every not Republican to not use words you consider "pretentious"?
I will forever revile Neil Abercrombie for defying Senator Daniel Inoyue’s dying wish.
How else do you describe passing the puck to a player in the middle of the ice?
Name a SINGLE egregiously weird sounding thing Harris or Walz said?
Musk dumped $230 million in PA to gotv. it worked. this wasn't about fancy words.
Voter: Why don't you say a New Deal?
FDR: Meh, same thing.
Messaging requires repetition and shorthand. That's why you say a Green New Deal.
Fuck white men...period.
Also, people rightly grok that they do not, in fact, mean the same thing, but dudes like Schatz *think* regular folk won't know the difference.
In any case he can be correct whether he has fallen into the error of using abstractions and inscrutable language
Who do you think benefits when the populace is uninformed?
There were literacy campaigns and movements to extend universal public education in this country.
That's they don't want history taught.
also: the contemporary right is literally nothing but magic words. ask them to define ‘woke’ etc.
And then back further to the even broader outlook on communication in the treatises from ancient Syracuse
"The point is we have a whole language that’s maybe not offensive, or irritating."
A lot of people DO find it irritating. But it's a pet peeve and not the reason Democrats lose elections.
This is how the average liberal pundit sees the American voter base.
While the speeches were bonkers, the examples were accessible contextually to the public.
If you can’t talk pop culture, you can't win the jury, as a trial lawyer worked for said
If people aren't paying attention to the content of the speeches, then the main problem is that voters are just stupid.
People just don't want to get raped, exploited, murdered or let racists run the show and we don't give a FUCK what it's called or what words people use. Who fucking cares?
For one thing, it's almost as if putting together a winning campaign is not an exact science.
As this idea that it's somehow more respectful to describe the same condition with more words. They're homeless people, you don't have to say "people experiencing homelessness".
